GOVT DEBT HITS P5.17 TRILLION, FROM P371 BILLION FROM A YEAR
AGO

Lunas - The outstanding debt of the national government rose P371 billion, or
7.8 percent, in May to P5.147 trillion from a year ago on higher local
borrowings.
The debt stock month-on-month rose 1.42 percent, or P72 billion, from P5.075
trillion in April.
The government debt translates into each Filipino owing P54,758 based on a
population of 94 million.
Nearly 60 percent, or P3.073 trillion, of the outstanding debt P5.147
trillion was owed to local lenders, while 41 percent, or P2.109 trillion, to
foreign creditors.
Domestic debt climbed 11 percent, or P301 billion, in May from a year earlier
and 1.8 percent, or P55 billion, from April level as the government issued more
debt securities than the amount of maturing loans during the period.
The Treasury said net issuance of debt notes amounted P18.73 billion in May
while the net appreciation of the US dollar and the euro against the peso on
multicurrency retail bonds contributed P0.29 billion.
Borrowings from foreign lenders rose 3.4 percent, or P69 billion, from P2.040
trillion a year ago.
