Indie rule
Just like last year, independent films once again dominated the Gawad Urian

a total of seven awards including Best Film; Best Supporting Actress for Jean
Garcia; Best Director and Best Screenplay for Alvin Yapan; Best Cinematography

Design for The Natural Phenomenon of Madness; Jewel Maranan's Tundong Magiliw

The Natatanging Gawad Urian, was given to cinematographer Rody Lacap for
contributions to the film industry through his works Kisapmata, Itim and Oro
Plata Mata. Previous recipients of this special award were National Artists
Fernando Poe Jr., Gerardo de Leon, Lamberto Avellana and Eddie Romero, and
creative artists like cinematographers, editors and scriptwriters.
The Gawad Urian is given annually since 1977 by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang
Pilipino (MPP). Its objectives are "to examine Filipino films, bolster the
interest of the masses and the Philippine film industry, study and celebrate the
achievement that will help define the good Filipino film, and cultivate the
knowledge and skills that the film medium was designed for, which is to be a
medium of communication and expression of our culture according to the standards
and conditions of filmmaking in our country."
