MANILA, JUNE 1, 2012 (STANDARD) A TROPICAL depression will
induce rain in Southern Luzon including Metro Manila, the eastern section of the
Visayas, and some parts of Mindanao when the schools reopen on June 4, the
weather bureau said Thursday.
Weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said the depression was spotted 310
kilometers east of Borongan in Eastern Samar, and that it could develop into a
storm. It will be named ''Ambo''.
"Ambo will be the first typhoon to enter the country this year," Aurelio told
reporters.
The storm will not hit land but will still trigger rain, the weather bureau
said.
"We are now in the period of transition from summer to the rainy season,"
Aurelio said.

SUMMER is not yet over, but a storm could hit the country before the end of
the month because of a low-pressure area in the Bicol region, the weather bureau
said Monday.
"We expect one or two typhoons, but since it is barely two days before June,
one tropical depression may also come," forecaster Antonio Soriaga told the
Manila Standard.
He said the low-pressure area was spotted 270 kilometers east northeast of
Virac, Catanduanes, it had been bringing rain to the eastern section of Southern
Luzon and the Visayas, and it could develop into a tropical storm or a typhoon.

Typhoons arrive in the third quarter—usually in July—but the strongest visit
during the months of October to December.
One of the deadliest cyclones to hit the Philippines was typhoon
Didang—international name Olga—which ravaged the country from May 12 to 17 in
1976 and killed at least 374 people.
Still, less than half of the tropical cyclones that threaten the Philippines
actually make landfall, the weather bureau says.

MANILA, Philippines - The rainy season has officially started, the weather
bureau confirmed yesterday.
"The observed weather patterns during the past few days signal the onset of
the southwest moonsoon season," the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and
Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said in a statement.
PAGASA explained that the occurrence of intermittent to continuous rains in
Metro Manila and the western sections of Luzon and Visays are associated with
the southwest moonsoon or hanging habagat.
"With these develoments, the onset of the rainy season in the country has
been established," the weather bureau said.
"However, breaks in the rain events are commonly experienced that last for
several days to weeks due to the strengthening of the ridge of the North Pacific
high pressure area," it noted.

Meanwhile, an active low-pressure area (LPA) is enhancing the southwest
monsoon as it moves closer to the country.
The LPA spotted at 330 kilometers east of Borongan, Eastern Samar as of 8
a.m. yesterday will be given the local name "Ambo" once it develops into a
tropical cyclone within the next 24 to 40 hours.
Embedded along the inter-tropical convergence zone, the LPA is expected to
bring rains over the eastern section of Luzon and Visayas, including the Bicol
region.
"These weather systems will bring cloudy skies with scattered to widespread
rains in the Visayas and Northeastern Mindanao (in the next 24 hours)," PAGASA
said in an advisory.
"Residents living in low lying areas and along mountain slopes are advised to
be on alert for possible occurrence of flashfloods and landslides," the advisory
added.
