CIARA SOTTO IS NEWEST HEAD TURNER IN CORONA
TRIAL

MANILA, MAY 26, 2012 (ABS-CBN) Here's another welcome
distraction for viewers of the impeachment trial of Supreme Court Chief Justice
Renato Corona.
Actress Ciara Anna Sotto, daughter of Senator Vicente "Tito" Sotto III, has
been added to the list of the "Corona trial head turners" as she accompanied her
father at the Senate on Friday.
"At the Senate today w/my sister," the actress said on Twitter.
Ciara now joins the ranks of Atty. Karen Jimeno, one of the spokespersons of
the defense panel; Ria Christina Fariñas, daughter and chief of staff of Ilocos
Norte 1st District Rep. Rudy Fariñas; Atty. Richie Ramos-Pilares, who served as
the legal counsel of PSBank Katipunan branch manager Annabelle Tiongson; and
Atty. Macel Jimenez, who just happened to be seated behind one of the podiums
used by senator-judges while addressing the court.
Last February, netizens bored with the impeachment proceedings started a
beauty contest for pretty women they see at the trial.
A popular choice seems to be Jimeno, with Filipino Internet users creating
Facebook fan pages and memes after the defense lawyer.
Atty. Karen Jimeno is the stunning spokesperson of the defense team
in CJ Corona's impeachment trial.
As more than a few have observed, Atty. Jimeno is more than a pretty face.
One blogger noted about her interaction with the media: "She provides an oasis
of decorum and dignity to the jologry that has long been the hallmark of
Philippine print and broadcast news."
She was recruited to the defense team by Corona defense lawyer Ramon
Esguerra, her former UP professor.
Jimeno is a 2005 UP Law graduate who went on to Harvard Law School for her
Master of Laws. She just arrived from the United States last September. She had
previously worked for the law firm Quisumbing, Torres, Evangelista before she
enrolled at Harvard.

Lawyer Jimeno: Equal media coverage helps in changing public

Defense spokesperson Karen Jimeno gives her view on the Pulse Asia
survey showing that 47 percent of Filipinos think that Chief Justice Renato
Corona is guilty.
MANILA, Philippines—Defense lawyer Karen Jimeno said Tuesday that their
performance in the impeachment trial might not be able to change the public
perception of whether Chief Justice Renato Corona is guilty or not "if the
[media] coverage is not equal."
"The factors that will affect the opinion of the public is not limited to our
performance inside the impeachment court," Jimeno told reporters in an
interview.
Pulse Asia released on Tuesday the results of their survey showing that 47
percent of Filipinos believe the Chief Justice is guilty of the charges in the
impeachment complaint.
There were 43 percent who said they are undecided and only 5 percent said
they believe Corona is not guilty.
"Ideally, we want an objective public that, when presented with the evidence,
they will be convinced about their opinion based on the evidence they see from
both the prosecution and defense," Jimeno said.
However, Jimeno said that majority of the public can only follow the trial
through the media and "the problem here is if the coverage is not equal, and it
is not objective the way they are presented, then regardless of how we perform
inside, it might not make any change."
She said different kinds of people will take the survey differently. There
might be some who become convinced by the survey and be swayed to believe that
Corona is guilty. There might also be others who see that the result is not
conclusive yet and they would wait until the presentation of evidence is over.

"I am hoping there are more people who are objective and thinking that they
will have to wait for the end of the presentation of evidence," Jimeno said.
