MANILA, NOVEMBER 25, 2011
(STANDARD) Pasay City police and court officials did not
agree with the Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse
Robredo when the latter said that the mug shots of former President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo, published in the front page of another newspaper and
circulated on the Internet, were fake.
Southern Police District head Senior Supt. James Bucayu said the online
images were the same ones submitted to the regional trial court.
The shots bore the details on the information booking plate, he said.
Robredo insisted the images were altered. The mug shots may not be released
without the agreement of both panels.
The chief of the National Police, Gen. Nicanor Bartolome, bolstered Robredo's
statement, pointing out several discrepancies between the actual and the
published shots: the captions, the captions' format, the dimensions of the
photos.
What trivial differences.
It was her all right. If the mug shots were not real, they were what the real
shots most likely looked like.
Real or fake, the damage has been done: the image of the humiliated former
President—donned in neck braces, as opposed to her formal, even haughty demeanor
the public knew so well —fed some people's perverse craving for seeing the
once-mighty grovel.
This does not come as a surprise. Arroyo is, after all, not the usual
suspect, and her mug shots are more than just that.
As the legal and political battles continue, our law enforcers could only
disagree on a matter as mundane as a photograph's authenticity.
It is characteristic of how often this administration refuses to see the
point in its blind pursuit of selective justice.
The defiance of an order of the Supreme Court, the rushed filing of the case,
the immediate issuance of an warrant arrest—all these are collateral damage in
achieving the Palace's single objective.
