PHNO-SB: 9 ARTISTS, 19 TO 63 GET TOGETHER IN 'MYTHS OF OUR MAKING'

9 ARTISTS, 19 TO 63 GET TOGETHER IN
'MYTHS OF OUR MAKING'

MANILA, AUGUST 6, 2011 (MALAYA) AFTER a whole year of being in the
College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines, I and some youngies,
goodies, and oldies are together in art exhibit entitled: "Myths of Our Own
Making".
Myths express the fundamental ideas, which serve as the basis of human
experience: fears, desires and motivations. Though place, time, and details vary
in our works, the substance remains the same.
Myth-making is every culture's way of connecting with the natural world, with
each other, and with the unknown. A shared myth is like a social contract,
uniting a culture by validating and propagating its values, motivating its
structure.
Thus it follows that each of those included in this exhibit is a part of a
myth, which we express with our attitudes, beliefs, customs, and participation
in society. Myths infuse our relationships and worldview; and, in our personal
ways, we transform these myths and make them our own. We are transformed by
myths, and individually and/or together, we transform our world.
Art is the space for re-telling myths and making new ones. So affirm this
rag-tag troupe of 9 artists, ages ranging from 19 to 63, who have come together
for this exhibition.
Ed Arcilla's path in life has taken him through winding roads in the fields
of singing, acting, advertising and photography.
• Award winner Cesar Gueta (Letras y Figuras Grand Prize 1993) resides in
Bicol where he paints everyday scenes in the laidback lane and portraits of
family and friends with unrestrained joy of life – yet takes the 10-hour bus
ride once a week to attend 1 class.
• Titat Ledesma's intuitional processes culled by the experience of being
wife and mother contemplate the subtleties in complex human emotions.
• Cristina Escario, a UP Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate now pursuing her
master's degree, took a leave from teaching at the University of San Agustin
Iloilo, to infuse her art with critical thinking and 'creative democracy',
moving beyond the formalist and subjective
• Chen Breva's background in advertising, photography and graphic arts
contribute spunk to her edgy, avant-garde painting style.
• The imaginative eye of Pamela Always Lastimosa allows her to produce
sophisticated artworks from the simple abaca fiber that her family exports for
industrial use.
• Jerwin Collado's inquiries about contemporary life and lifestyles translate
into unpredictable combinations of forms and colors.
• Dawani De Leon's youth and innocent demeanor belie the depth of her
concerns and the breadth of her range in painting skill.
• yours truly, Boysie Villavicencio, the mananahe and student
• And lastly, we are proud to inform you that , our classmate, Prof.
Jonathan Olazo is our curator and adviser for this exhibit.
All our roads have led us to the College of Fine Arts of the University of
the Philippines.
Whether to pursue graduate studies, a bachelor's degree or certificate course
in the visual arts, we have sprouted out to be our own distinct branches in the
tree of Philippine art.
"Myths of Our Own Making" is a compilation of the visual record of our
individual journeys through contemporary life in the Philippines.
The exhibition opens on August 16 at 6:00pm, thru September 9, 2011, at the
Sining Kamalig Art Gallery, located at the 4th Level, Gateway Mall, Araneta
Center, Cubao, Quezon City.
Please come and enjoy the colors in our works.
