ALL IS NOT LOST FOR NURSING GRADS; ALTERNATIVE JOBS OFFERED
MANILA, AUGUST 20, 2011 (MALAYA) BY MYLA IGLESIAS - About 85,000 nurses graduate every year, with not much hope of landing jobs.
This deep and wide pool of trained health professionals is being eyed by Accenture Philippines to serve as the backbone of its care management business process outsourcing services which cater mostly to US health-care insurance clients.
"This is a win-win solution given the number of nurses we produce yearly," Benedict C. Hernandez, Accenture Philippines BPO service delivery operation head, said.
"This provides significant opportunities for people with nursing background. They can participate in the BPO variant and build a career," he said.
Accenture Global pioneered care management BPO in the country as it early on recognized the potential of the surplus of nursing graduates.
Hernandez said the company started offering care management BPO services since last year.
Accenture now employs several hundreds of nursing graduates and intends to significantly grow the workforce.
Hernandez declined to disclose the salary ranges that Accenture offers nurses.
All he said was that workers in the BPO industry are well-paid relative to others.
"The compensation is very attractive," he said.
Care management BPO services have three categories.
Utilization management has nurses looking at medical requests and evaluating their necessity.
Disease management focuses on the prevention of complications and standardization of care of patients who suffer from chronic conditions. Lastly, the wellness and prevention program provides information on topics such as diet or exercise in creating healthier lifestyles.
Hernandez said Accenture's new services can help clients save on administrative and medical costs.
The Philippine operation is a pioneer in Accenture's Global Delivery Network, which has more than 50 delivery centers around the world.
The Philippine delivery centers form the second-largest node and the third-largest locations in terms of headcount, next to the United States and India.
With more than 21,000 professionals in Metro Manila and Cebu, Accenture's Philippine operation is one of the largest and most mature in the country.
It is the largest third-party non-voice provider, with a growing contact center operation and management consulting practice.
