NESTOR MATA: WAR W/ WORDS DAYS BEFORE THE ADVENT OF HOLY WEEK

MANILA, APRIL 19, 2011 (MALAYA) Nestor Mata 'Noynoy has declared war against his 'political enemies' who riposted they, too, will expose the corruption in his government.'
DAYS before the advent of Holy Week, President Noynoy ignited a "war" with those he called "political enemies," referring to those identified with the corrupt nine-year-old regime of his predecessor Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Her allies quickly riposted that they, too, will expose the corruption in Noynoy's nine months- and- nineteen days-old government. "Noy wants war, war he'll get!" they declared, as headlined by Malaya Business Insight.
What we are about to witness is a "war of words." And the battlefield will be in the halls of Congress where the allies of Arroyo, all belonging to the minority opposition will retaliate with allegations that there are "corruptocrats" in Aquino's administration, too.
After getting the "green light" from their party leaders to expose those "corruptocrats" around Noynoy, Gloria's allies are now preparing a series of exposes concerning three issues against him and his executive officials, including graft and corruption and ineptitude. The allegations are "damaging," as one opposition leader said, and "we're calling for congressional inquiries!"
But, as political observers prognosticated, such probes are bound to be aborted by Noynoy's political henchmen that belong to the majority bloc in the House of Representatives. "It will not be surprising," as one pundit wrote, "if Noynoy's allies will suddenly put a stop to such probes… and if such exposes hit his cronies they'll be quickly absolved by Noynoy himself."
"His track record shows it," the pundit noted, recalling how he absolved his target shooting buddy, an undersecretary of the Department of Interior and Local Governments (DILG), of any responsibility for the Luneta hostage fiasco; of the two Cabinet members linked to scams but were just as quickly absolved by Aquino, and other appointees hounded by allegations of corruption.
That's probably why Noynoy's Executive Secretary aka "Little President," is trying to douse the fires of war ignited by Noynoy. "He's not at all combative," he assured. "It's just part of his anti-corruption drive…" If by such moaning of useless denials he hopes to do away with the public perception that his boss Noynoy has failed to fulfill his campaign promises of "change and reform," he is sadly mistaken.
Already, the process of disillusionment with Noynoy's administration has begun. The very latest of public opinion surveys clearly show that majority of the people now feel he has failed to live up to his commitments, and his battle cry of "Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap" (if no one is corrupt, no one will be poor) is nothing but empty words.
The same thing happened to his mother Cory in her time in Malacañang. She went through the agony of watching her immense popularity sink in a raging flood of criticisms not only by the opposition in Congress, but also in mass media, print and broadcast networks, even including those who used to sing hosannas to her. They, too, accused her administration of graft and corruption, of violations of human rights, and of arrogance and hypocrisy.
Oh yes, in Cory's case all this happened over two years in her presidential term, unlike Noynoy whose popularity is already waning only over two months short of his first year in office.
In Cory's time, I now vividly recall, she and her fawning coterie thought they had a monopoly of virtue, intelligence and patriotism, and hated being criticized, yes, just like Noynoy and his gang of political allies and cronies these days.
Perhaps, as I wrote then, "they forgot an essential fact in Philippine history, proven through the years of predictable changes in government and presidents that in our country disagreement with the government is not evidence of lack of patriotism. Quite the contrary, it takes the highest form of patriotism to denounce and expose and de-mythify political idols with feet of clay…
"And the very few in the opposition and mass media – unlike the very many in government – are the ones who can truly voice the heartaches and the thousand natural shocks of those who suffer, by whatever degree, from the incompetence, the ineptitude, the arrogance, the abuses of those in power!"
Now, the very same things may well be said about Noynoy Aquino!
