MALAYA EDITORIAL: LAKAS-KAMPI MEMBERS AS WHISTLEBLOWERS?

MANILA, APRIL 19, 2011 (MALAYA) 'What is more likely is that nobody would take this camp of demonstrated liars seriously.'
THE party mates of Gloria Arroyo in Congress have reportedly received instructions from the Lakas-Kampi leadership to start exposing corruption in the Aquino administration after charges were filed against their prominent allies.
Do they seriously want us to believe they have the goods against some officials in the current administration but chose to keep silent all this time? Where they perhaps trying to seek some kind of a quid pro quo so that President Arroyo would not run after prominent scumbags during the previous administration?
The marching order was issued to Lakas-Kampi legislators after charges were filed against former Rep. Prospero Pichay for anomalously infusing P480 million into a failed Laguna bank and Rep. Mikey Arroyo, son of former President Gloria Arroyo, for not paying the government P73 million in income taxes.
Had the instructions been prompted by a principled stand against corruption, people could conceivably give the benefit of the doubt to Lakas-Kampi whistleblowers, although what is more likely is that nobody would take this camp of demonstrated liars seriously.
But raking the Aquino administration muck to protect the "good name" of Pichay and Mikey? What a laugh.
Most of the current legislators affiliated with Lakas-Kampi made hay for nine years. With one or two exemptions, they all have skeletons rattling in their closets. They are deliberately lying low so as not to call attention to the improprieties/illegalities they committed in the past administration. We doubt any of them have are foolish enough to offer themselves as targets for graft or tax investigations.
No, we are not saying that all Aquino administration officials are lily white. There are whispers of this and that influence peddler working behind the scenes. With the passing of time, big-time corruption might just again rear its head.
But preventing/exposing such will not come from the ranks of Lakas-Kampi members. The success of the anti-corruption campaign will lie on President Aquino's determination to redeem his campaign promise and on the people who elected him to office. The latter will be closely watching this administration and the President will surely not let pass even the hint of a corruption scandal.
Lakas-Kampi legislators have no role to play in the reform process, except perhaps as negative examples.
