PHNO-SB: JANET JACKSON A HIT AMONG CELEBS / JANET DELIVERS

JANET JACKSON A HIT AMONG CELEBS / JANET DELIVERS

MANILA, FEBRUARY 6, 2011 (BULLETIN) By NEIL RAMOS — American singing star Janet Jackson's Feb. 4 concert at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Plenary Hall was a resounding success inasmuch as thousands of Filipinos—including a number of local celebrities—braved the traffic, the slight drizzle and, more so, the steep ticket charge just to be able to watch the show.

Jackson's triumph was a seeming rebuff to a suggestion that singer Kuh Ledesma made only a few weeks ago, calling for the "regulation" of foreign concerts around these parts, insisting that such shows allow for iniquitous competition detrimental to local artists.

Though Ledesma has since rescinded on the petition—this, after a number of people including a few local musicians voiced their disagreement—she said she still hopes lawmakers would seriously look into the matter and soon.

An idea she offered was that of prohibiting foreign acts from staging concerts during the Valentine's season, similar to the banning of foreign movies during the Christmas holidays for the annual Metro Manila Film Festival.

Apparently not with Ledesma on this is singer Karylle, actress Angelica Panganiban, actor Marvin Agustin, fashion model Bubbles Paraiso, actress-TV host Iza Calzado, designer Mich Dulce, journalists Jessica Soho and Rhea Santos, designer-socialite Tessa Prieto-Valdez, husband and wife TV hosts Paolo Abrera and Suzi Entrata, Lander Vera Perez and Regine Tolentino, Jinkee Pacquiao and Mr. Fu—who were among those seen enjoying the Jackson show.

Most of those in attendance shelled big bucks to watch the performance, the ticket to which were priced from as low as P3,100 to as high as P15,500.

In a short interview with GMA news after the concert, Calzado claimed that the ticket cost was well worth it.

"Sulit na sulit, she was fantastic," said she of the deceased pop star Michael Jackson's younger sister's act.

The concert form part of Jackson's "Number Ones: Up Close and Personal World Tour," which the singer said is the biggest yet in her career.

Some of the songs she sang at the show were the hits, "Doesn't Really Matter," "Black Cat," "Rhythm Nation," "All For You," "Let's Wait a While," "Again," and "Go Deep" which she dedicates to the Philippines.

Concert review: Janet Jackson –Number Ones World Tour

MANILA, Philippines – She promised that her concert would be up close and personal with her fans.

Janet Jackson definitely lived up to that promise during her Number Ones concert presented by Wilbros Live Friday night at the PICC Plenary Hall. Having a large band play in an intimate venue gave the feeling that fans were really up close with Janet.

Before the show began, Janet premiered the music video of Go Deep, her song which she dedicated to Manila. Then she wowed and surprised everybody by her unexpected entrance in the middle of an unsuspecting audience. She kicked off things by performing a string of her upbeat hits which included the hit single Feed Back. Wearing a tight and sexy leather outfit, she didn't seem to have any problem performing every dance step she made famous in her music video.

The monitor in the middle of the stage showed video clips of Janet's acting performance in various TV shows and movies in the US, which kept the crowd entertained and anticipating, while the singer was changing wardrobes. After the clips, Janet came out in a gown and did a medley of her love songs which included Let's Wait A While and Again.

A Janet Jackson concert wouldn't be complete if there wasn't any segment on her late brother, The King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Michael sang his part while being flashed in the monitor during Janet's performance of Scream. There was also a heartwarming feeling and Janet almost broke down in tears when she sang Together Again. During the song, the monitor flashed slide shows with pictures of her and Michael while they were growing up.

Although the concert lasted barely two hours, fans were all screaming, jamming, cheering and singing with Janet from the beginning up to the end of the show. This made Janet smile in appreciation as fans showed that they knew most of her songs.

There was not much of special effects, nor any pyrotechnics, but it made the fans connect a little bit more to Janet. The performance was about Janet and her fans. It was all about being up close and personal.

Janet Jackson's Manila concert attracts 'Grim Reapers' By ANNIE S. ALEJO February 4, 2011, 4:17pm

Janet Jackson's Blackglama ad as it appeared on various international fashion/lifestyle magazinesMANILA, Philippines — It's one of the most-awaited concerts by an international superstar, but it seems Janet Jackson's Feb. 4 engagement in Manila hasn't only attracted the singer's local fans—it has also caught the attention of the "Grim Reapers."

In an announcement made by the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)'s local office, 10 of its members will descend on the concert Friday night dressed as Grim Reapers. The PETA activists—in a bid to catch media attention as they champion their cause—will protest outside Jackson's PICC Plenary Hall concert dressed as "Death" and holding signs bearing "Janet: Fur is Dead" and "Janet: Animals Suffer and Die on Fur Farms."

This is in connection with Jackson's mid-2010 ad campaign for mink, for the brand Blackglama. Known for their use of fur in their luxury line, in early 2010, the company's CEO and president Joe Morelli set out on his brand extension initiative with a campaign called "More than Mink." The proposed products for this brand extension included handbag sunglasses, perfume, and—much to PETA's chagrin—mink-lined accessories and clothing, thus allowing for consumers to wear the Blackglama brand all year-round and not just during the colder months of the year.

Jackson's protest-worthy indiscretion, from PETA's point of view, is appearing as brand ambassador in brand's ad for its "The Legend" campaign. As the newest "Legend," Blackglama released a statement then saying:

"Janet is an icon in the world of music and entertainment, a true legend. She represents everything that this storied campaign embodies. Janet is to entertainment what Blackglama is to luxury."

In a video posted on Blackglama's site, Jackson was shown behind the scenes at the campaign's photo shoot, with her song "Black Cat" playing as background music as the singer was shot wearing black fur and various other outfits. The company likewise designed a "capsule collection" for Jackson based on her music and persona, although it didn't note if the collection carried fur as well.

Jackson's Blackglama print ad reportedly went out to Vanity Fair, Vogue, W, The New York Times Style Magazine, Harper's Bazaar and Women's Wear Daily beginning September last year. Other "The Legend" icons that appeared in the campaign prior to Jackson were: Sophia Loren, Diana Ross, Lauren Bacall and Linda Evangelista.

"What makes a person a legend to me is someone who has made a major, major contribution… a major mark… on the world that lasts forever," Jackson says in the video. But clearly, aligning herself with animal abuse is a mark PETA wishes Jackson didn't make.

PETA's release noted, "With so many fashionable, warm and cruelty-free materials available, there's simply no excuse for wearing fur." It goes further to illustrate how the demand for fur contributes to animal cruelty. Noting that animals are trapped for their fur, they suffer excruciating fur before they are "bludgeoned or stomped to death by trappers."

Fur farms are also said to confine animals to tiny, filthy cages, exposing them to weather extremes and resulting in many going insane before they are killed "by electrocution, poisoning, gassing or neck-breaking." Apparently, PETA also has information from an undercover investigation of a fur farm in China—now the world's leading fur exporter—revealing animals, including cats and dogs that are often house pets and treated as family members—are often skinned alive
