MANILA, JANUARY 6, 2011 (MANILA TIMES) By Cris G. Odronia, Reporter - The government has approved proposed transport fare hikes for Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT 3), Light Rail Transit (LRT) 1 and LRT 2, a Malacañang official announced on Wednesday. During a press briefing, Secretary Ricky Carandang announced that President Benigno Aquino 3rd has "approved in principle" the fare increases in MRT 3. LRT1 and LRT 2.

He, however, refused to say how much the increases will be but he said that the fare adjustments are reasonable and will be acceptable to commuters.

Carandang added that he would leave it to Transportation Secretary Jose de Jesus to announce the light-rail fare hikes and when the increases will be implemented.

"The MRT [3] increases are a little bit different because the government effectively owns a significant portion of that so I think we have much more leeway in terms of that," the secretary said.

Carandang added that the proposed MRT 3 fare increases were discussed during the Malacañang economic team's cluster meeting with President Aquino in Malacañang on Wednesday.

MRT 3 covers the Baclaran (Parañaque City)-SM North (West Avenue)-Baclaran stretch.

LRT 1 runs from Baclaran-Monumento (Caloocan City)-Baclaran and LRT 2, from Recto Avenue-Santolan (Pasig City)-Recto.
