MANILA, OCTOBER 22, 2012 (PHILSTAR) By Evelyn Macairan - To
commemorate the canonization of Pedro Calungsod, the Philippine Postal Corp.
(PHLPost) will launch tomorrow stamps in honor of the second Filipino saint.

PHLPost announced that for this special occasion, they would start selling
stamps to the public but these will only be made available at the EDSA Shrine
during the noon Mass in honor of Calungsod, who will be canonized in Rome
tomorrow.
PHLPost will release a single stamp design where Calungsod holds a palm leaf
in his left hand as his right hand rests on the chest, signifying his deep Roman
Catholic faith. On the right side of the stamp is the missionary route that
Calungsod took to reach the Marianas Islands.
The post office is also issuing a limited edition 50,000 stamps to be sold at
P9 each.
The Calungsod stamp would be made available at the PHLPost main office in
Liwasang Bonifacio, Manila and other selected post offices on Monday.
The stamp will be sold until Oct. 20 next year.
Calungsod was a 17-year-old Catholic Filipino martyr who was killed while
doing missionary work in Guam in 1672. The late Pope John Paul II beatified him
on March 5, 2000.
The official image of Calungsod was flown to Rome last Oct. 16.
Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma reminded the public to prepare for the
canonization by participating in activities of the church.
Novenas and processions have started since Thursday in Ginatilan, Cebu where
Calungsod reportedly grew up.
A procession is set today at 1 p.m. to trace the footsteps of Blessed Pedro
from Barangay Casing, from where most Calungsod families are said to have
hailed, to the town square.
A drama will be presented on the life of Calungsod and a fireworks display
would be held in the evening.
A Mass will open the special day on Sunday in Ginatilan at 10 in the morning
and by 4 p.m. (10 a.m. in Rome, scheduled time for the canonization), Ginatilan
will welcome the new saint through the peeling of church bells and the blowing
of horns of ferry boats docked at the Ginatilan pier.
Meanwhile, the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral will be the seat of activities in
line with the Calungsod canonization tomorrow.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) will supervise the month-long nationwide
pilgrimage of the image of San Pedro starting next week.
PNP chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome directed all police regional,
provincial and station commanders to prepare security plans for the nationwide
pilgrimage.
Bartolome issued Letter of Instruction 44/2012 DUAW-NASUD to cover the
security preparations for the San Pedro Calungsod Pilgrimage nationwide
procession of the official pilgrim image of the second Filipino saint from Rome.
The PNP chief said the image of San Pedro will arrive on Oct. 25 at the Ninoy
Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 from Rome and will be brought to Cebu
City for the thanksgiving Mass.
Bartolome said the PNP prepared the procession itinerary from Oct. 25 -Nov.
30, including Vigan, Antipolo, Parañaque, Quezon City, Pampanga, Malolos,
Caloocan, Cavite, Lipa, Lucena to Daet.
He noted that security preparations would always be done in coordination with
all regional chaplain services and nationwide diocese and the Catholic Bishops'
Conference of the Philippines (CBCP). Meanwhile, Vice President Jejomar Binay,
representing President Aquino, arrived in Rome last Friday to join at least
5,000 Filipinos to witness the canonization. "The presence of the thousands of
Filipinos here and the millions more around the world who are eagerly awaiting
Blessed Calungsod's canonization as the second Filipino saint reaffirms our
faith as a nation. I hope his dedication and sacrifice will serve as an example
for the Filipino youth to emulate," Binay said.
Binay, Presidential Adviser on Overseas Filipino Workers' (OFW) Concerns, had
earlier urged OFWs in various parts of the world to make Calungsod their patron
saint.
He said Calungsod could serve as a great inspiration to the millions of
Filipino migrant workers.
Binay will later go to Israel after Calungsod's canonization to visit Israeli
experts on technological advances in agriculture and food production. He wants
to apply the same technologies in agriculture and food production presently used
by Israel in the Philippines.
Prior to his arrival in Rome, Binay also represented the President at the
2012 European Development Days (EDD) in Brussels, Belgium.
Senate President Pro-Tempore Jinggoy Estrada will be joining the official
Philippine delegation and the Filipino community in Rome to witness the
canonization.
Estrada will be joined by his mother, former senator Luisa Ejercito, his wife
Precy and their children, and his sister Jacqueline Lopez.
They are also set to attend the Votive Mass of St. Pedro Calungsod in St.
Peter's Basilica on Thanksgiving Day on Oct. 22, to be presided over by Cebu
Archbishop Emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal. –With Cecille
