DUE TO LOW RATINGS LIBERAL PARTY SHOWS NO

Herrera - NOT one of the Liberal Party members made it to the Aquino
administration's senatorial slate as a result of their poor showing in the
surveys, prompting the ruling party to adopt "outsiders" from other parties
allied to it, an official said Sunday.
"It would be a huge embarrassment for the President if his slate would not
sweep the elections," an LP insider, who was privy to the inter-party
negotiations and screening, told the Manila Standard.
Liberal Party originals House Deputy Speaker Lorenzo Tañada III, whose term
ends in 2013, Customs Commissioner Rufino Biazon, and presidential adviser on
the environment Nereus Acosta were dropped from the slate, the LP Coalition
insiders said.
Biazon and Acosta ran but lost in the senatorial race in the 2010
presidential elections with Mr. Aquino as the LP's standard bearer.
The LP Coalition slate is now composed of three candidates from Senator
Manuel Villar's Nationalista Party, one from businessman Eduardo Cojuangco's
Nationalist People's Coalition, and the rest new LP recruits and independents.

Presidential nephew Bam Aquino and former Senator Jamby Madrigal were sworn
in by the President only on Sept. 28, while former Senator Ramon Magsaysay Jr.
joined the President's party only in August.
For several months, Tañada had been puzzling over why he was being kept in
the dark as to why he was not being drafted as a candidate.
Tañada was not even invited to join the provincial sorties at the time
President Benigno Aquino III had been openly endorsing Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo
Angara, son of Senator Eduardo Angara.
Tañada and Angara were spokesmen during the impeachment trial that ousted
Chief Justice Renato Corona.
"Despite Erin's [Tanada's] extensive and free media exposure during the
five-month-long impeachment trial, his popularity rating had never improved. On
the other hand, Sonny moved up to land in the magic 12," the LP insider
said.

MANILA - On his first day as Interior and Local Government chief,
Manuel Roxas II said he would immediately file his leave of absence as president
of the Liberal party to avoid a conflict of interest now that 2013 election is a
few months away.
After taking his oath on Saturday, Roxas said he would concentrate on his
duties as a member of the Aquino Cabinet, with eradicating criminality among his
priorities.
His decision to stemmed from the fact that the midterm election would be one
of the biggest events in which his department and the National Police would be
one of the very important and major components.
Roxas replaced the late Jesse Robredo who died in a plane crash in August.

Roxas was accompanied by his wife, broadcaster Kornina Sanchez and members of
the Liberal Party.
He said that he would pursue the reforms at the DILG.
He said that as soon as he assumed office, President Beigno Aquino III
ordered him to give priority to the eradication of criminality in the
country.

Aquino cousin, Jamby Madrigal take oath as LP

MANILA, Philippines—Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino IV and former Sen. Jamby
Madrigal on Friday took their oath before President Benigno Aquino III as
members of the Liberal Party (LP) in Malacañang, officials said.
"He (Bam) took his oath after Jamby," Strategic Communication Secretary Ricky
Carandang said in a text message, confirming their oath-taking.

The oath-taking came three days before the start of the filing of certificate
of candidacy on Monday for next year's mid-term elections.
Aquino IV, the President's cousin, and Madrigal are reportedly on the
administration senatorial slate that is filled with candidates from LP's
coalition partners Nacionalista Party and Nationalist People's Coalition.
"They're part of the slate," a party official said by phone.

The official did not rule out the possibility that Customs Commissioner
Rufino Biazon would be tapped to fill the 12th slot. Biazon had earlier said he
had been asked by the President to stay at the Bureau of Customs.
The official said the ticket would be announced Monday.
Madrigal, a former senator who lost her bid for the presidency in 2010, is
the author of the Magna Carta for Women and the Tubbataha Reef National Park
Act.
