MANILA, Philippines - Convicted murderer Rolito Go surfaced yesterday, a day
after he was reported missing from detention at the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in
Muntinlupa City.
Go, who looked disheveled and had contusions in some parts of his body,
appeared at a press conference held at the Philippine National Police (PNP)
headquarters at Camp Crame.
Go claimed that he and his nephew Clemence Yu were kidnapped and brought to
Batangas and then were released without any ransom payment.
PNP chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome said the initial investigation
showed that Go and his nephew were kidnapped near a chapel in the compound of
the NBP late Tuesday.
"After all the procedures have been completed, we will now turnover Mr. Go to
NBP, while Mr. Clemence Yu will remain with the Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG)
until the completion of the investigation," Bartolome said.
He said the PNP was preparing a computerized sketch of the suspects as
described by Go and his nephew.
Bartolome said he had informed Bureau of Corrections director Gaudencio
Pangilinan of Go's claims that they were kidnapped by four armed men who posed
as agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).
"I told him (Pangilinan) that based on Go's statement and circumstances, it
appears that they were forcibly taken from the (NBP) compound and we will
investigate his allegation," he said.
Go, for his part, even showed his bruises in the arms and head sustained in
his struggle with their kidnappers.
Appearing weak and tired, Go went on to reveal a colorectal bag attached to
his abdomen. His nephew Yu is attending to him as a nurse since he was diagnosed
with colon cancer in 2007.
Before Go appeared before the press conference, Bartolome spoke about how the
police are pursuing the leads in tracking down the convicted murderer.
Bartolome said there were two versions: that Go escaped from prison and the
second was that he was abducted.
"Incidentally, there are reports saying that Go is a case of missing person
or that he left NBP…the PNP pursued the two angles," he said.
Bartolome admitted he received information that Go was indeed forcibly taken
last Tuesday night.
Pangilinan, on the other hand, said he would wait for the result of the
investigation to find out if Go was indeed kidnapped as he claimed.
Pangilinan said it was not the first time that Go escaped, even before he
took charge as head of the NBP.
Go's story
According to Go, four men approached him and Yu on Tuesday night and
introduced themselves as NBI agents.
Go said he was about to go back to his hut inside the minimum security
compound when the suspects asked him to go with them for questioning on reports
that he goes in and out of the prison compound without permission.
Go said he tried to persuade the suspects that he is sick and could not go
out of the compound without permission from prison officials.
But then a scuffle ensued when the suspects forced him and Yu to board their
latter's Honda Civic car.
Go said one of the kidnappers drove the car and went out of the NBP compound
through Gate 1. He added the guards there usually do not check anyone coming out
of the gate since it is located near a busy community with about 10,000 housing
units and a public market.
Go said they were brought to Sto. Tomas in Batangas from where the kidnappers
called up his family demanding ransom money.
According to Go, the kidnappers decided to release them after it became
apparent that they could not get any ransom.
He said the kidnappers even gave them money for a ride back to Manila.
Go claimed that he and Yu even borrowed the bus driver's cellphone to contact
their family.
They got off the bus at Alabang before noon and were met by their family and
AKG operatives.
"Our operatives were informed that Go called up with the information that
they were already in a bus as they were released by the abductors somewhere in
Sto. Tomas in Batangas," Bartolome said.
"They would wait for the bus somewhere in Alabang where the bus would have
its final stop. Our operatives with the family members went there and true
enough Mr. Go and Mr. Yu disembarked from Lucena bus that came from Sto. Tomas,
Batangas," he said.
The AKG took the two into custody and brought them to Camp Crame, where they
were given medical treatment before an investigation was conducted.
Bartolome said Yu's car – a white Honda Civic (UUR-805) – was found abandoned
in Sto. Tomas. Police forensic experts recovered a spent shell and a live bullet
from the car.
It was not immediately known if the kidnappers fired the handgun inside the
car to scare the hostages and the caliber of the gun that was used.
Go also failed to mention if any of the kidnappers fired a handgun inside the
car.
Go, 63, was convicted for killing engineering student Eldon Maguan in 1993.
Go is set to be released next year.
Go was among the convicts granted "living out" status for serving a minimum
penalty of less than six years, those who are sick or are over 70 years old.
As a minimum security prisoner with designated work assignment, Go is allowed
to live outside the prison compound but still inside the NBP reservation. His
hut is located beside the Inang Awa Church in the compound.
Go was last seen near his hut about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday and failed to show up
during the head count about three hours later, NBP superintendent Schwarzkopf
said.
The PNP turned over Go under the custody of the NBP later in the afternoon
yesterday.
Schwarzkopf said Go would lose all his privileges as living out prisoner and
would be returned to the maximum security facility pending investigation of his
claims.

MANILA, Philippines - The family of road rage victim Eldon Maguan yesterday
described convicted murderer Rolito Go's "abduction and release" story as a
poorly written "zarzuela."
Eliot Maguan said Go's claim that his family could have had a hand in his
kidnapping is "purely a product of a wild imagination."
"He's (Go) very good at concocting stories. We don't know where he gets his
theories," Eliot said.
Eliot made the statement after Go, in a press conference at the Philippine
National Police (PNP) headquarters in Camp Crame, suggested the Maguan family
might have a hand in his supposed kidnapping.
Eliot said his family is stressed by Go's latest "zarzuela" as he urged the
government to put a stop to the convicted murderer's antics.
Eliot said he had to rush their 82-year-old mother, Rosario, to the hospital
for a thorough medical check-up after she learned her son's killer had
disappeared from prison.
"We have suffered long and hard over the pain of losing Eldon and the ordeal
of getting justice for him. This should have ended when the Supreme Court upheld
Go's conviction. But what happened after was a long running telenovela
consisting of special treatments, parole hearings, housing privileges, minimum
security, etc.," said Eliot, the youngest of Maguan's four siblings.
The Maguan family urged the Department of Justice (DOJ) to strictly implement
the sentence imposed on Go.
The Pasig City regional trial court (RTC) sentenced Go to 40 years
imprisonment for the killing of Eldon, a La Salle Engineering student, in a road
rage incident in Greenhills, San Juan City in 1991.
"He (Go) committed a heinous capital crime so he should be inside the maximum
security prison cell. He must be stripped of all benefits he used to enjoy and
must be treated the same way all those who committed heinous crimes should be
treated," Eliot said.
He called Go's behavior a "mockery of justice."
Go first escaped from detention at the Rizal provincial jail in 1994 and was
re-arrested at a piggery farm in Pampanga in 1996.
After Go's latest escape, Eliot said the DOJ must look into his evasion of
sentence and file appropriate charges.
The New Bilibid Prisons has declared Go an escapee and under the law, he
should be detained at the maximum security cell for six months instead of in the
minimum security cell, Eliot said.
"Our family expects that after this charade, he (Go) will be made to answer
for his actions. We beg the government to end our suffering. Give us justice,"
he said.
Eliot gave a press briefing yesterday in Mandaluyong City almost the same
time the PNP presented Go before the media in Camp Crame.
