DE LIMA NOT ACCEPTABLE TO HIGH COURT
MAGISTRATES?
MANILA, JULY 6, 2012 (TIMES) Written by
: Ameli Tanyag, Correspondent - A DAY after she accepted her nomination for the
position of Chief Justice, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said that members of
the Supreme Court don't make her feel welcome.
"I may be acceptable to the rest of the judiciary, to the lower courts [such
as] the Court of Appeals, the regional trial court or the municipal trial court,
but I am not sure if I am acceptable to the members [of the High Court]," de
Lima said.
The Justice chief had accepted her nomination, made by the Volunteers Against
Crime and Corruption and the San Beda Law Alumni Assocation, by saying that she
has the "character, records and passion [needed] for such a crucial and revered
post."
She also said that she has become an effective and trustworthy leader of the
judiciary after former Chief Justice Renato Corona was removed from his post in
May.
De Lima added that she is ready to face her former colleagues in the Judicial
and Bar Council (JBC). She was formerly an ex-officio member of the body.
On Sunday, a member of the High Court said that de Lima should be
disqualified as a nominee because she is facing a number of criminal and
administrative charges.
"She does not have the respect of the Supreme Court justices because she is
too arrogant. She is just an election lawyer. She is a legal lightweight," the
Supreme Court justice said.
