CONSCIOUSNESS

MANILA, JUNE 22, 2012
(ABS-CBN) The Quizon family on Thursday opted for the country's
king of comedy Dolphy to undergo dialysis to support his weakened kidneys.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday afternoon, Dolphy's son Eric Quizon said
his father's vitals were stable overnight and that's why his doctors suggested
that the veteran actor undergo dialysis.
"The reason why the option of dialysis was offered to us and the reason why
we opted for dialysis is because overnight his vitals became stable. That was
the longest time that his vitals were stable. But like I said, his condition
still fluctuates," he said.
Quizon said his father had his first dialysis session at 2:40 p.m. today and
will have to undergo the procedure indefinitely.
"This dialysis will help support ang kidney ng daddy ko. It lessens the
excess body fluids na nasa katawan ng daddy ko at the same time nawawala ang mga
toxins," he said.
On Wednesday, Quizon revealed that his father has been suffering from chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which hinders the flow of air to the
lungs.
The condition is generally permanent and may be progressive over time.
Because of Dolphy's medications, his illness had caused a complication causing
his kidneys to fail.
Glimmer of hope
Quizon also said their family was very glad when they caught Dolphy opening
his eyes.
"Ang maganda dito kasi, somehow nagmulat siya ng kanyang mata at tumingin
siya sa paligid. Natuwa ang mgakapatid ko, kaming lahat, kasi alam namin na
nadidinig niya kami. May konting kasiyahan dahil kumbaga nagkaroon ng
opportunity ang ilang mga kapatid namin na makita siya na nagmulat ang mata and
somehow really trying to communicate more than just like 'yung binubulungan
namin or sinasabihan namin ng mga pinapasabi ng mga nagmamahal sa kanya," he
said.
Quizon said this sparked a glimmer of hope. "Ang pamilya namin na umaasa na
makakasama at makakapiling namin ang aming ama," he said.
Meanwhile, Quizon said his father's platelet counts remain very low and thus
is susceptible to hemorrhaging.
"May bleeding sa loob at inaalam namin saan galing ang bleeding. But, of
course, we're all hoping at naniniwala kami sa power of prayers at kahit papano
said.
Quizon said some of his siblings are expected to arrive this week from the
United States.
Dolphy 'in and out of consciousness' By Shiela

MANILA, Philippines (3rd UPDATE) -- King of Comedy Dolphy is now in
critical condition and cannot talk, according to his son Eric Quizon.
In a live interview on "TV Patrol" Wednesday, Quizon told anchor Korina
Sanchez his father has been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD), which hinders the flow of air to the lungs. The condition is generally
permanent and may be progressive over time.
Likening COPD to cancer, Quizon said Dolphy's illness has developed into a
toxic metabolic encephalopathy, which could lead to sepsis or the poisoning of
the blood.
"There is a possibility so inoobserbahan pa po siya ngayon. Since this
morning talagang inoobserbahan siya. It could lead to that (sepsis)," he said.
"He was diagnosed five years ago of COPD. It's a progressive disease. Para
siyang cancer pero hindi kasing grabe ng cancer. 'Yung body niya, patuloy lang
siyang manghihina. It's like emphysema. Ang ganitong klaseng sakit, five years
In cancer terms, very
critical na iyon," he said.
Quizon, however, said his father is a fighter, having survived ten bouts with
pneumonia in a year.
In and out of consciousness
He said his father currently has been "in and out of consciousness" and they
cannot really talk to him directly.
"Hindi siya nakakasagot but he responds through his eyebrows, through his
eyes. He twitches so may mga ganung pagkakataon so alam namin na naririnig niya
kami. He hears and he's listening at naririnig niya ang sinasabi namin sa
kanya," he said.
Quizon said Dolphy's doctors informed them that some of his father's organs
are weak and that he is being observed round the clock.
Last wishes
Quizon said Dolphy already started to make his last wishes when he learned
that he has COPD.
"Naghahabilin na siya...noong nalaman niya na may COPD siya, nag-umpisa na
siyang kausapin kami. Noong time pa lang na iyon, inayos na niya lahat ang mga
dapat ayusin," he said.
Even if Dolphy is not responding back to them, Quizon said, "Alam namin na
lumalaban siya. Alam namin he's hanging on."
Longer life
Meantime, Quizon said the family is still hoping "na makakasama pa namin
siya."
When asked how Dolphy's long-time partner Zsa Zsa Padilla was doing, he said
like other families suffering the same ordeal, "lahat kami ay vulnerable, we are
all emotional."

MANILA, Philippines -- Despite being linked with several women, Dolphy,
considered the country's comedy king, eventually settled down with his last --
and greatest -- love: singer and actress Zsa Zsa Padilla.
In Dolphy's autobiography "Dolphy: Hindi Ko Ito Narating Mag-Isa," Padilla
admitted that she has been attracted to older men.
She met Dolphy at Bistro Lorenzo in Greenhills and was asked to do a tour
with the comedian in the United States, as well as a movie for RVQ Productions,
"Mga Anak ni Facifica Falayfay" and another movie "Black Magic" for Seiko Films.
Padilla said their relationship started after she got tired of hearing rumors
about her and the veteran actor.
"I got tired of going home and being accused of doing things I hadn't done,
to the point I started to think of living up to the accusations. So then it
happened," she said.
"He was the only man na nangungulit sa akin during that period. And charming,
too. Who wouldn't fall in love with Dolphy? Plus, as fate would have it,
depressed din ako," added Padilla, who's cousin had committed a suicide that
time while she herself was having problems with her then husband.
"It was a dark, dark phase of my life, and he was there to console me. Siya
lang din ang pinagsusumbungan ko, the conflict with my ex. Punung-puno na ako.
The nagging was the most difficult. I had to leave. It was ugly, super ugly. I
gave up," she said.
But with her booming career and projects with other leading men, Dolphy would
often get jealous.
Moreover, Padilla said she also got fed up with the negative reports about
their relationship.
"So, I left for the US, and I told Dolphy, pagbalik ko, it's either tayo na,
o split na. Talagang I gave him an ultimatum," she said.
Padilla admitted that their first two years together were tough times since
they kept on fighting.
But love won in the end.
"We've been together for 20 years or so. No'ng magsimula kami, sabi ko, Lord,
bigyan mo lang ako ng 10 years with this man, masaya na ako. Nakaka-20 na kami,
so parang bonus na. But when he's sick, I get so afraid of losing him. I sleep
in a bunk bed beside him when he's hospitalized. Our daughters volunteer to take
my place, pero umiinit lang ang ulo ko, I go 'NO!" she said in the book.
For his part, Dolphy described Padilla as sweet, caring and thoughtful.
Moreover, he said Padilla learned to love all his children.
"Supportive siya sa mga anak ko lalo na in times of crisis," Dolphy said.
Dolphy has said that given a chance he still hopes to marry Padilla, with
whom he has two daughters Nicole and Zia.
"Esperanza ang tunay na pangalan ni Zsa Zsa. It means hope. I hope to marry
her. Ayaw ko nang sabihing I want to. Kasi pagwina-want ko, hindi natutuloy,"
Dolphy had said.

According to Vandolph, Moreno has been emotional about Dolphy's critical
condition.
Vandolph said he is glad that his father showed improvement on Thursday but
refused to further discuss his father's health on camera.
He said their family is leaving all the public statements to actor-director
Eric Quizon.
Meanwhile, Dolphy's other son Ronnie Quizon said they are awaiting the
arrival of some of their other siblings who are expected to visit their dad in
the intensive care unit of the Makati Medical Center.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Thursday afternoon, Quizon said three of
their siblings will arrive from the United States on Friday.
He also said their entire family is in the hospital and they are alternately
taking small breaks to go home to rest.
Quizon, however, did not answer the question regarding the supposed medical
operation which was suggested by Dolphy's doctors.
His brother Eric earlier told radio dzMM that the doctors were actually
suggesting a procedure but it will depend on the results of the comedian's blood
tests.
