MOST FILIPINOS BELIEVE SENATE WILL
CONVICT CORONA - ONLINE SURVEY
MANILA, MAY
29, 2012 (INQUIRER) By Kate
Evangelista - Most Filipinos believe that the Senate acting as the impeachment
court will convict embattled Chief Justice Renato Corona come D-day on Tuesday,
an unofficial online poll conducted by Inquirer.net showed on Monday.
The Senate is scheduled to render its decision on the impeachment case of
Corona on Tuesday mainly on his alleged failure to declare $2.4 million in
deposits and P80.7 million in "comingled'' funds in his statement of assets
liabilities and net worth (SALN).
In the survey question "What do you think will the Senate ruling be on
impeached chief justice Renato Corona?", 71.72 percent of respondents (33,683
votes) said that Corona will be convicted. Meanwhile, only 28.28 percent (13,280
votes) of the respondents said that Corona will be acquitted.
A total of 46,963 votes were cast as the unofficial poll closed at 7:02 p.m.
Monday.
During the oral arguments on Monday, defense lawyer Eduardo de los Angeles
requested for the acquittal of Corona, arguing that "not every violation of
public trust is an impeachable offense" and that the chief justice's
non-declaration of dollar accounts in his SALN were justified by the
confidentiality of his accounts.
Meanwhile, prosecution team member Ilocos Norte Rep. Rodolfo Fariñas
highlighted the contradicting "palusot" (excuses) which Corona used in his
statement and the chief justice's concealment of 98 percent of his total cash
deposit.

Corona remains under doctors' tight watch
ABS-CBNnews.com
MANILA, Philippines - Doctors of Chief Justice Renato Corona at The
Medical City in Pasig continue to strictly monitor his health following his
hypoglycemic episode last week, which doctors fear has an effect on his heart.
The chief justice is now confined at a regular room and is no longer at the
hospital's intensive care unit (ICU).
His blood pressure and blood sugar level are being closely monitored.
Corona experienced hypoglycemia during his testimony before the impeachment
court last Tuesday, his doctors said.
He also experienced high blood pressure Tuesday and on Friday, the second
time he appeared at the impeachment court.
Before he testified, his blood pressure hit 170/100.
His blood sugar level is now controlled, and his blood pressure has gone
down. His family, however, does not want to subject him to high levels of stress
at this point.
Corona's doctors have stressed that hypoglycemia and hypertension pose a high
risk on his heart functions.
His doctors have not given the chief magistrate the clearance to have him
discharged from the hospital, pending the completion of a series of tests, and
to limit the amount of stress he is subjected to.
His wife, Cristina, children Carla and Francis, and son-in-law Constantino
Castillo III are with him at the hospital.
Visitors are limited so that Corona may rest.
This is the first time Corona has been hospitalized since he assumed his post
as chief justice in May 2010.
He is subjected to the annual physical and medical examinations required of
justices of the Supreme Court (SC) and passed them each time since his
appointment in 2002.
Corona was subjected to open heart surgery in 1995 and 2008. He has also been
a diabetic for the past 20 years.
