NAMAN NATUTULOY
MANILA, APRIL 24, 2012
(MALAYA) "Kung bibigyan, bibigyan," comedian Dolphy yesterday
said about the possibility of him receiving the National Artist award.
In an interview over DZMM's program "Aksyon Ngayon" with Julius Babao and
Kaye Dacer, the 83-year-old entertainer sounded a bit frustrated about what some
view as a long overdue honor for a living legend.
"Ako naman ay abang na lang ng abang, kung bibigyan bibigyan. Kung hindi ok
lang," he told Babao, "Pero siyempre hindi talaga akonag aabang kasi madalas
sinasabi hindi naman natutuloy."
Long acknowledged as the country's one and only king of comedy, Dolphy,
despite recent reports of failing health, was quick witted and even laughing in
some portions of the interview which also touched on his more than six decades
in showbiz.
He said his body of work is comprised of over a thousand movies, including
his initial forays in the limelight as an extra.
"Limang piso," he answered Dacer on how much he got for one of his first
projects, "as chorus boy, sumasayaw kasama ng grupo."
The actor's name cropped up as one of the entertainment industry
stalwarts, along with those of actresses Vilma Santos and Nora Aunor, who are
being considered for the prestigious recognition.
Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Lito Lapid, both movie actors and producers
before entering politics, have both voiced their support for Dolphy's
declaration.
Even Batangas Governor Vilma Santos, whose name was broached by House Deputy
Speaker Lorenzo "Erin" Tanada III last week to be considered as National Artist,
was for the octogenarian to get the award.
Some stars, like Sharon Cuneta, via social networking site Twitter, have also
expressed their support for Dolphy's name to be included in the list of National
Artists that includes his friend, Fernando Poe, Jr., who was declared National
Artist for Theater and Film posthumously in 2006. Poe died on December 14,
2004.
