PHNO-OPINION: BY CHARLIE MANALO: EXPECT NOY WAR IF HACIENDA LOSES

BY CHARLIE MANALO: EXPECT NOY WAR IF HACIENDA
LOSES

MANILA, APRIL 24, 2012 (TRIBUNE) INSIDE CONGRESS
Charlie Manalo - Last Dec. 16, four days after 188 members of the House of
Representatives blindly affixed their signatures to the impeachment complaint
against Supreme Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona, the Tribune came out
with an exclusive story exposing the agenda behind such move, which was
obviously Palace-initiated.
In that story, the Tribune bared that the plot was allegedly hatched in a
meeting among the elderly members of the Cojuangco family in their ancestral
home after the high court declared illegal the stock distribution option they
had employed in their vast sugar estate, the Hacienda Luisita, to avoid being
covered by the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).
Incidentally, both the CARP and the SDO were first implemented during the
incumbency of the late President, Cory Cojuangco-Aquino.
But this was not after the country's first OJT president, Noynoy Aquino, was
reportedly berated by the elders of the Cojuangco family, who had accused him of
pushing the SC magistrates into rendering such decision after Noynoy made the SC
one of his punching bags, accusing the magistrates of protecting the interests
his predecessor.
The Tribune story further alleged that since the high court had already ruled
for the distribution of the Hacienda Luisita to its tenant-farmers, the solution
seen by the Cojuangco elders was for the sugar estate to be priced beyond the
capacity to pay of the Luisita beneficiaries by adopting the dissenting opinion
of SC Associate Justice Lourdes Sereno regarding the just compensation for the
Cojuangcos, pegging the valuation of the sugar estate at its 2006 market value,
which would be about P10 billion.
And to execute their plan quite smoothly, it was then reportedly agreed in
that meeting that Corona would have to be impeached, which would effectively
send a chilling effect to the rest of the justices since they would face the
same fate if they would not toe Sereno's line.
That was four months ago and today, Tuesday, the SC is about to render its
final ruling on the Hacienda Luisita issue. And basing on their Nov. 12
decision, it is likely the high court will ignore the Cojuangcos' plea for a
higher compensation package and disregard Sereno's formula for a just
compensation.
And if ever that would be the ruling of the SC today, the Cojuangcos would
have to bid adieu finally to the more than 6,000 hectare-sugar land, through
which they have effectively duped the government and exploited the farmers for
over half-a-century.
And in that case, the very essence of Noynoy's agenda in the Corona
impeachment would be lost as there would no means for him and his family to
reclaim Hacienda Luisita. And so, from this day on, the Corona impeachment would
no longer be about Luisita, but all about retribution.
Hence, it wouldn't be surprising if from now on, Noynoy would use all the
resources available to him to go all-out against Corona. Not only to remove him
from office, but to crush him for good. Annihilate maybe. After all, this guy is
known to take his fights too personally.
In fact, in his post in a social networking site, a cyber friend, Jerry
Ocampo bared that just last year, Noynoy ordered that an image of the Virgin
Mary inside the Malacañang Chapel be removed and placed inside the stockroom
despite the protestations of the members of the Presidential Security Group.

And his only reason was that the he doesn't want that particular image of the
Virgin Mary inside the Malacañang Chapel as it was brought there by his
predecessor, former President Gloria Macapagal -Arroyo. Not only unpresidential
but outrightly sacrilegious.
What kind of man who claims to have come for a very religious family would
dare remove a religious image from the chapel simply because it was donated by
his perceived enemy? Maybe only those who are sick in the mind.
And that is what Corona should wary from now on. But as head of the
judiciary, he should not be cowed. He and the rest of the magistrates should not
be intimidated by this vindictive president. Corona should hold true to his word
and help defend and protect the sanctity and independence of the last bastion of
democracy.
