FOR MAYOR: A 'SURE WINNER'- MIRIAM
MANILA, APRIL 21, 2012 (ABS-CBN)
by David Dizon, ABS-CBNnews.com - Resigned senator Juan Miguel Zubiri
is set to leave the Lakas-Kampi-CMD party of former President Gloria Macapagal
Arroyo and join the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) party of former President
Joseph Estrada.
Sen. Jinggoy Estrada said Zubiri's joining the PMP will pave the way for the
resigned senator to join the senatorial ticket of the United Nationalist
Alliance (UNA).
"For the record, former Senator Zubiri will be joining our party. I have
consulted my father (former president Estrada) about it and he is willing and
(Zubiri) is welcome to join our party anytime. If he joins PMP, eventually he
will join the UNA coalition," he told radio dzMM.
Estrada said leaders of the UNA coalition will have to sit down with Sen.
Koko Pimentel and convince him to withdraw his objection to Zubiri's acceptance
to the Senate slate.
Pimentel earlier opposed Zubiri's inclusion in the UNA ticket, saying the
resigned senator was a willing beneficiary to electoral fraud in 2007.
Pimentel, who opposed Zubiri's victory in the last senatorial election, was
only able to sit as senator after Zubiri's resignation last year.
Mitos welcome to join UNA
Estrada also posed no objection to the inclusion of Zambales Rep. Mitos
Magsaysay to the UNA slate.
He said Magsaysay, a known ally of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo,
is a welcome addition to the UNA ticket because of her track record.
"As I said, nothing is definite. If you ask me personally, I will include her
in the lineup. Unang-una, she has a good track record in Congress. She has no
track record of corruption. Secondly, she is quite identified with former
President Arroyo but not all those identified with GMA are crooks and thieves,"
he said.
Estrada said the PMP will be fielding at least 4 senatorial candidates in the
2013 election: Zubiri, San Juan Rep. JV Ejercito, Cagayan Rep. Jack Enrile and 1
more candidate.
He said the UNA coalition is looking for candidates who are credible and have
a good chance of winning.
"It's not only the winnability of course. Mas pipiliin namin yung mananalo
pero yung credibility at magagawa sa ating bansa, yun first and foremost and
concern namin," he said.
'We support PNoy'
In the interview, Estrada thanked President Aquino and his sisters, Kris,
Ballsy, Pinky and Viel, for attending his father's 75th birthday party Thursday.
The senator said his father was surprised by President Aquino's arrival,
especially knowing the President's busy schedule.
He also thanked the President's sister, TV host Kris Aquino, for coming to
the party even though it was also her son Baby James' birthday.
Estrada rejected former Senator Ernesto Maceda's statement that a vote to
acquit Chief Justice Renato Corona would be a blow to President Aquino and would
benefit Vice-President Binay, who is seeking the presidency in 2016.
He said that while Aquino ran against his father in the 2010 election, his
family has always been very supportive of Aquino.
"We will still be aligned and we will still support the President because we
want him to succeed. If he fails, all of us fail," he said.
He also said he has never talked to Binay about possibly joining him as his
running-mate in the 2016 poll.

MANILA, Philippines – Sen. Miriam Defensor Santiago gave an unusual reason
why she believes former President Joseph Estrada should run for mayor of Manila.
In an interview, Santiago said she has several strong reasons why she wants
Estrada to spend his next few years in public office.
"He made his name as a public administrator, first as mayor of San
Juan...plus it will spare Dr. Loi Estrada, his wife, of the problem of trying to
determine where he is during office hours," she told reporters.
The lawmaker said if she is still in the country, she will campaign for
Estrada "because I believe that he is always the people's choice."
"I believe he is a sure fire winner if he decides to throw in his hat. And
then you saw that he is physically fit anyway....He will become an excellent
mayor because he knows the dynamics of politics because these are very hard to
learn except through time," she said.
Santiago is set to leave her post in the Senate after being elected judge of
the International Criminal Court.

MANILA, Philippines - Former President Joseph Estrada disclosed yesterday
that he would consult Vice President Jejomar Binay and the United Nationalist
Alliance (UNA) before he decides to run for mayor of Manila in the 2013
elections.
Estrada said that Binay, who was his running mate in the 2010 general
elections, could give him advice on the proposal to join the Manila mayoralty
race next year.
"I have to consult VP Binay especially with our alliance," Estrada said.
He told ABS-CBN News Channel that he was overwhelmed by the continued warm
welcome he got from the residents of Tondo, Manila where he distributed gifts
last Wednesday as part of his 75th birthday celebration.
"The reception remained the same – still very warm. It did not change a bit,"
Estrada said.
Estrada said if he decides to run and wins as mayor of Manila, his focus
would be to bring back the old glory of Manila as the country's capital.
He said that Manila has been neglected for the past several decades.
"I owe it to the poor Filipinos whatever I have and where I am right now.
I've been a popular movie actor because of you. You also supported me when I ran
for mayor of San Juan, then became a senator, vice president and president. Erap
cannot repay all of you in life or in death," Estrada said.
Estrada said he would not have any problem in the residency requirements
under the law because he was born in Tondo, Manila and still has a house in Sta.
Mesa, Manila and several apartment units in various parts of Manila.
"Manila is our capital city and we have to make it beautiful and
progressive," Estrada said.
Estrada denied that he is engaged in premature campaigning when he
distributed gifts in Tondo, Manila during his birthday.
"This has been my lifetime pledge and I'm doing this every year even if I win
or lose in the elections. I lost in the last elections, but I still love the
poor Filipino people who have been supporting me all the way from being a movie
actor until I became a senator, vice president and president," Estrada said.
"But I have not made my final decision yet. It's still 50-50. But I am
seriously thinking about it (running for Manila mayor)," Estrada said.
