PHNO-OPINION: NESTOR MATA: A FIGMENT OF THE IMAGINATION?

NESTOR MATA: A FIGMENT OF THE
IMAGINATION?

MANILA, MARCH 9, 2012 (MALAYA) Nestor Mata (photo) -
('Ever since President Aquino startled his own Palace Guards about a "plot'
to oust him from office, keen political observers wondered if it was just an
illusion in the mind of his informers.' )
PRESIDENT Noynoy Aquino made a great point of saying last week that there's a
"plot" to oust him from office before his term ends in 2016, but he didn't
reveal the names of the fomenters, making political observers think that maybe
it wasn't true at all.
Quite puzzlingly, Aquino talked about it during the 26th anniversary
celebration of the Presidential Security Group (PSG, an elite corps of troopers
assigned to protect him at all times. It was held at the PSG's headquarters in
the same premises of his official residence "Bahay Pangarap" (Dream House),
right across the Malacañang Palace along the Pasig River.
Not only this, the very next day Noynoy told a different story in Calapan
City in Oriental Mindoro, where he inaugurated an electrification program for
the towns of that province. This time he claimed that his detractors are
"dwindling" and then took a swipe at his critics, and again he didn't say
whether they were political or media critics. "There are people… there are
groups in our society who are called 'contrarian'…Whatever position you take,
expect a contrary one to emerge."
Surprise of surprises, the following day the public was informed by a
spokesperson of the Armed Forces of the Philippines that was no such report of
"a brewing ouster plot" or of a coup d'etat or even a military uprising. And
even the blabbering Palace mouthpieces didn't utter a single word about it.
So, one can only wonder where, in heaven's name, did Noynoy hear about such
an "ouster plot" to depose him from the presidency even before his six-year-
term comes to an end? Was it a figment of the imagination? An illusion in his
mind, or, was he experiencing what's called in Latin "Hallucinata"?
The trouble, as I once wrote in this column, is that the President is
surrounded by sycophants, servile flatterers who have become slanderers and
squealers, and have been misguiding him since Day One of his presidency, one
year, eight months and eight days ago!

Oh yes, it's probable that that the so-called "ouster plot" could have been
conjured by Aquino's band of black propagandists to regain public support for
his program of reforms in government, and renew the waning public interest in
the impeachment complaint that he initiated against Chief Justice Renato Corona.

They panicked when the most recent poll survey showed that there's less and
less attention to the on-going Corona trial before the Senate impeachment court.
One reason for this, as noted by former Senate President Ernesto M. Maceda, who
has been keenly watching the proceedings, could have been caused by the
President's almost daily "overkill" verbal salvos against Corona which made him
"an underdog" in the people's minds.
Certainly related to this issue over the conduct of Corona's trial are the
thoughts of no less than Vice President Jejomar Binay, famed defender of human
rights and adherent to the Constitution and laws of the land during the Marcos
years.
"A fair and impartial trial --- and only a fair and impartial trial--- of
Chief Justice Corona…," Binay said in a speech during the 34th anniversary of
the Philippine Trial Lawyers Association (PTLA) at the Manila Hotel last Friday,
"unclouded by suspicions or accusations of misconduct and improper dealing on
the part of the participants in the proceedings, or the part of those whose
legitimate right and duty are simply to observe the proceedings without seeking
to intervene in the outcome, would be a great boon to the nation."
The most telling statement of Binay, as clearly understood not only by his
PTLA listeners, but even by non-lawyers, was that they should be prepared to
protect the country's constitutional democracy and its institutions.
"We cannot depart from due process and the rule of law…," he emphasized,
referring to the Corona impeachment process. "It should never be used as a way
to bend the law or assert false supremacy of one branch of government over
another, or put one in conflict of another!"
Incidentally, Vice President Binay, whose speech came a day after the
President talked about fomenters and putsches, did not for one moment mention
anyone in particular, but, as an old Tagalog saying goes, "Bato-bato sa langit
ang mataman huag magalit"!
Whoever gets hit by a stone from the sky shouldn't get mad!
