IN LYBIA / e.ESTUDYANTE FOR KIDS
MANILA, MARCH 3, 2012 (PHILSTAR) By Mayen Jaymalin - About 1,700
jobs await Filipino nurses in Libya, the Department of Labor and Employment
(DOLE) said yesterday.
Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz (photo) said the government would resume
deployment as soon as the partial ban has been lifted.
"We are just awaiting the official recommendation from the Department of
Foreign Affairs (DFA) for the full lifting of the deployment ban and as soon as
we have it we will resume deployment," she said.
Baldoz said Libya's Ministry of Health has already informed the Philippine
government of its desire to hire at least 1,000 nurses.
"The Ministry of Health in Libya alone is already needing 1,000 nurses and
there are 700 other vacancies in other health facilities," she said.
Of the 700 vacancies, 300 Filipino nurses have already been recruited and are
awaiting the lifting of the ban before they could leave for Libya, Baldoz said.
DOLE previously allowed a partial lifting of the deployment ban to enable
rehires to return to work.
The number of Filipino workers in Libya has already surged to 3,000 since the
partial lifting of the ban.
Most of the those who have returned were medical workers and those employed
in the gas and oil industry. Citing a report from the Philippine Overseas Labor
Office (POLO) in Libya, employers in Libya have recalled hundreds of Filipino
medical professional and other skilled workers, Baldoz said.
Early last year, the government had imposed a deployment ban and since then
close to 10,000 Filipino workers have been repatriated from Libya.
Medical workers and those employed in the gas and oil industries comprise the
biggest bulk of OFWs in Libya and they are employed by multinational companies,
Baldoz said.

BELIEVING that computer education is becoming essential in this age of
information technology, Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines has embarked
on a program called e.Studyante, which aims to provide schoolchildren with
child-friendly laptops.
P&G, along with the One Laptop per Child Association and Smart
Communications Inc., launched the program last December at its pilot school,
Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School (MLQES), in Tondo, Manila.
Celebrating its 75th year, P&G is making a commitment to help improve the
country's education system by making the computer and the Internet as essential
learning tools.
"We intend for this to complement traditional learning methods and tools. A
laptop and Internet connectivity becomes their window to the world's knowledge
and places it at their fingertips real-time. People and places they had no
access to before are now within their reach. These tools expand their horizons
and minds, and encourages them to dream and attain a brighter future," Chad
Sotelo, P&G country marketing manager, said.
People, Soleto said, can support the e.Studyante program by buying specially
marked P&G promo packs.
For the program's first few months, P&G vowed to give out 400 laptops to
five schools nationwide. "We hope that with your support, we will be able to
give even more laptops in the coming years so we can reach the goal of providing
1,000,000 laptops to school children," Sotelo said.
On Thursday, 340 laptops were donated to the Manuel L. Quezon Elementary
School. The donation was received by the Manila city government and the public
school's officials, who lauded P&G for its support to the local government's
own programs for education.
"One of the main agendas or programs of governance of our Mayor is education,
free education from elementary to college for the city constituents who cannot
afford the high cost of admission in private schools. The city government of
Manila conveys its sincerest thanks and gratitude to Procter and Gamble
Philippines," said Manila Media Bureau Chief Ric De Guzman, who spoke on behalf
of Mayor Alfredo Lim.
"The donation of laptops to students of MLQES by P&G as part of its
e.Studyante corporate social responsibility program is a significant, worthwhile
and commendable gesture for it gives opportunity to Filipino students to use
modern technology in their learning activities," de Guzman added.
The donation, school officials said, will provide the MLQES's more than 1,000
Grade 4, 5 and 6 students access to laptops, thus enhancing their classroom
learning.
Also present during the turn-over of laptops were Department of Education
Assistant Secretaries Narcisa Sta. Ana and Cristina Reyes; MLQES Principal Ruth
Ricaforte; P&G representatives Sotelo, Ana Dimapilis, Tess Yuviengco and
Darwin Flores; and MPD Station 1 Commander Rolando Tumalad.
