MANILA,
MARCH 29, 2012 (BULLETIN) By
LESLIE ANN G. AQUINO - An official of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the
Philippines (CBCP) lamented Tuesday that President Benigno S. Aquino III appears
inaccessible to the poor.
Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo, chairman of the CBCP National
Secretariat for Social Action (NASSA), said that although bishops were also
critical of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, she was however more
accessible to the poor than President Aquino.
"Before we were also critical of her but when we need to talk to her, we were
able to do so. We have access to her. With PNoy, we have none," he said in a
forum in Manila.
Pabillo cited the poverty summit last November when the Chief Executive
failed to attend or send a representative.
"He was supposed to send a representative there for him to be able to hear
the concerns of the basic sector but they canceled in the last two days," he
said.
The CBCP official said what is happening is contrary to what President Aquino
said in his State of the Nation Address (SONA). "He said there will be a system
for him to be able to listen to the people. Yet the poor and farmers are having
difficulty talking to him. He is inaccessible to the poor."
The CBCP-NASSA earlier disclosed that it had sent letters to the
administration regarding the Hacienda Luisita case but received no reply.
This developed as the Pasay City Regional Trial Court (RTC) said attending
physicians of Mrs. Arroyo have already complied with its order last Feb. 9 for
them to submit a monthly medical report, including the cost and expenses
incurred by the former President while on hospital arrest.
The court's spokesperson, Felda Domingo, said that attending physicians of
the former President at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center only complied last
Monday afternoon, beating the two-day extension order issued to them last week
by Branch 112 Judge Jesus Mupas.
Domingo said the Commission on Election (Comelec) filed a manifestation last
March 20 headed by Atty. Maria Juana Valeza of the failure of the attending
physicians of the former president to submit medical reports.
She said based from the reports the court will determine the medical
condition of the former President if she is already ready to be confined to a
regular detention facility as what the Comelec manifested last February.
The attending physicians of the former President pleaded for some more time
to submit the reports that the court ordered them to submit by March 9.
Base on the report submitted in court by Dr. Rafaelita Javier, head of the
VMMC Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, the former president still continues
to undergo physical therapy from Monday to Friday as she continues to complain
back and neck pain.
The VMMC also reported on the expenses that the former president incurred
during her stay at the hospital since her confinement last Dec. 9 up to
February, saying that a total of P65,535.43 was spent for her electrical and
water bills.
The former President has also incurred the amount of P52,547 for the room
rate of the presidential suite, including her medicines, the report said. (With a report from Jean Fernando)

CBCP moves anti-poverty summit to July before PNoy 2nd SONA
June 3, 2011 8:29am
Catholic Church officials have moved to July a national anti-poverty summit
that aims to find ways to help the poor.
The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) National
Secretariat of Social Action, Justice and Peace said the summit will be held
from July 3 to 5.
"The July summit will gather about 300 representatives from various sectors
and will have no less than the country's two cardinals delivering their keynote
address and message," the CBCP said.
"One of the goals of this Summit is to present to the government the real
situation across the country before President (Benigno III) Aquino delivers his
second State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday, July 25, 2011," CBCP NASSA
executive secretary Father Edu Gariguez said in an article posted on the CBCP
news site on Thursday.
Gariguez said the scheduled national summit would document the concerns of
the basic sectors on anti-poverty, equity, and social reform.
These concerns would be examined based on the government's Medium Term
Philippine Development Plan (MTDP), 2011 budget, and the policy pronouncements
of the chief executive and the legislature, Gariguez said.
An earlier CBCP article had quoted Gariguez as saying that the summit would
be held from June 4 to 5.
The CBCP indicated that the regional "consultations" leading to the summit
will be held this June.
He added that the summit will be a "follow-up" of the Second Rural Congress
held in 2008. - VVP, GMA News
