CEASEFIRE' DURING HOLY WEEK / NOY TO POLICE GRADS: UPHOLD 'DAANG MATUWID'
MANILA, MARCH 25, 2012
(PHILSTAR) By Delon Porcalla - In the spirit of the upcoming Holy
Week, Malacañang vowed yesterday to observe what it called an "impeachment
ceasefire" over the Senate trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.
"In the meantime, everybody can take a rest from the impeachment trial until
it resumes in May, so there will be time for the rest of the country, for the
Filipinos, to focus on other matters," Edwin Lacierda, spokesman for President
Aquino, said.
"We've long declared a ceasefire (on the impeachment)," he added, referring
to their self-imposed policy not to comment on the impeachment trial and leave
it up to members of the House prosecution panel to issue statements.
"We in the government continue to work regardless of whether or not there is
an impeachment trial going on," he added.
"Well, everybody will certainly observe the Holy Week rituals. So people, at
least Filipino Catholics, will be going to the annual Visita Iglesia on (Maundy)
Thursday. So I think everybody will be on good behavior," Lacierda said.
Aquino earlier expressed support for his spokespersons' self-imposed gag rule
on the impeachment of Corona so as not to give in to the ploy of the defense to
divert attention from issues that the chief magistrate must directly answer.
"The impeachment process is also an educational process. The public gets
educated on their rights, expectations. Now, the strategy of the defense lawyers
is to talk about many things except for the issues at bar," Aquino earlier told
reporters in Baguio City.
He said they are thinking about what the public would gain from the
impeachment so it is important not to lose focus of the real issues.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – President Benigno Aquino III led graduation
rites at the Philippine National Police Academy in Silang, Cavite Saturday
morning.
Speaking before 220 graduates of Sinagtala Class of 2012, Aquino urged the
country's new policemen to uphold the ideals of his administration's "daang
matuwid" by fighting corruption which once tarnished the image of the national
police.
"Sa mga magsisipagtapos ngayon, kumpiyansa akong taas-noo ninyong maisusuot
ang bagong uniporme at maipagmamalaki ang inyong papel sa lipunan," Aquino said.
Of the 220 graduates of the Sinagtala Class, 185 will serve under the
Philippine National Police (PNP); 14 chose to be part of the Bureau of Jail
Management and Penology (BJMP); and 21 will join the Bureau of Fire Protection.
"Bilang mga bagong pulis, bumbero at warden, maipagmamalaki ninyo na bahagi
na kayo ng propesyong kinikilala at nirerespeto ng mamamayan, hindi dahil sa
korapsiyon o pangongotong, kung di dahil sa inyong sakripisyo at katapatan,"
Aquino said.
He also commended the country's law enforcers for a reduced crime volume this
year, which he attributed to dedicated police work.
Just like his speech before Philippine Military Academy graduates last week,
the president promised improved work benefits, particularly housing projects for
the country's law enforcers.

Women cadets dominated the top 2 ranks of Class Sinagtala.
The class valedictorian, Cadet Marjorie Samson, offers her success to her
father who is working abroad.
"After all the hardship and pains na dinanas ko dito, nagbunga lahat," she
said.
Samson will join the BJMP and vowed to help reform the agency.
Most of the graduates, however, opted to join the PNP to augment the troops
in the provinces. -- With reports from Niko Baua, ABS-CBN

'Noynoying' gets international attention
Despite President Benigno Aquino III and Malacañang's attempts to
downplay it, "Noynoying" – a term coined to portray Aquino as a do-nothing
leader – is getting international and online attention.
The Wall Street Journal published an article on "Noynoying," the term that
Aquino's critics are presently pushing as a form of protest.
A "Noynoying" pose. GMA News "Noynoying plays on the widespread perception
that Mr. Aquino – who is widely known by the nickname Noynoy – might not be the
most hands-on president to have led the Philippines. Since being elected in a
landslide in 2010, Mr. Aquino has sometimes been caught laughing it up with
celebrities instead of attending to the impact of typhoons and other disasters,"
it said.
It added the "Noynoying" term also taps into old Philippine folk tales about
Juan Tamad, who tries to get by doing the least amount of work to get by.
Last Sunday, President Aquino brushed aside "Noynoying" as a new form of
protest in reference to his alleged inaction against surging oil prices.
"Hindi kailangang pansinin. You know, honestly, 'di ba, papaano mo ipapakita
sa ayaw tumingin? Paano mo iparirinig sa ayaw makinig? Kung masaya silang
ginagawa nila 'yun, nasa kanila 'yon," Aquino told reporters Sunday night.
Militant groups introduced the term last week, at a protest against rising
fuel prices.
The term involves sitting around and staring into space – a pose done by
activists in recent protest actions.
In an apparent bid to counter the "Noynoying" effect, Malacañang had issued
photos of Aquino at "work," including handling paperwork and inspecting sites.
Aquino himself met with Palace reporters in Baguio City last weekend and
claimed some people just don't want to recognize his achievements.
One of his political allies, Budget Secretary Florencio Abad, meanwhile, was
quoted as saying "Noynoying" would soon die out.
"It's unlikely that political activists will give up on Noynoying just yet,
though. Given the number of people routinely loitering around public buildings
in the Philippines on any given day, Noynoying seems an easy way to trick people
into thinking their protests are larger than they really are," the Wall Street
Journal said.
Wikipedia entry
On the other hand, "Noynoying" now has its own entry in the open-source
online encyclopedia Wikipedia.
The Wikipedia entry defined "Noynoying" as "an internet meme that defines an
effortless pose, or activity consisting of sitting or standing around, in an
unconcerned manner."
It said the word is "a parody of his work ethic as President of the
Philippines." — LBG, GMA News
