CJ TRIAL / CJ CONFIDENT OF ACQUITTAL
MANILA,
MARCH 9, 2012 (INQUIRER) By
Maila Ager - Senator Ferdinand "Bong-Bong" Marcos on Wednesday called President
Benigno Aquino III a "big nuisance" in the ongoing impeachment trial in the
Senate
Marcos said Aquino's public statements about the impeachment trial of Chief
Justice Renato Corona were causing confusion to the people following the
proceeding.
"Malaking pampagulo ang nangyayari… (What's going on is causing havoc…)," the
senator said of the President's statements against Corona, which he said were
different from the evidence being presented in the Senate, sitting as an
impeachment court.
"It muddies the water about what is in fact the evidence being presented in
court. I don't know what is the purpose because the senator-judges are very,
very focused in what is going on during the trial and we're very, very
conscientious about dispensing what goes on in the media," he said.
Aquino's continued public pronouncements, Marcos said, have also put the
senators, sitting as judges in the trial in a "very difficult position."
"Because as much as we'd like to explain all of the things were doing, we
don't have the opportunity to explain every move we make," he further said.
Marcos then called on the President to fulfill his promise that he would be
impartial and would keep his hands off the Corona trial.
"I remember he (Aquino) made a promise very early on that he would be
impartial and hands off in the impeachment process. Baka balikan na lang n'ya
'yong policy na 'yon (I think he needs to review that policy) and that would be
much better I think for everyone concerned," the senator added.

MARCOS: AQUINO SHOULD KEEP MUM ABOUT CJ TRIAL By

President Benigno Aquino III should stop making comments about the
impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona, a senator-judge in the trial
said on Wednesday.
Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. told reporters that the President's comments, which
often touch on the merits of the case, only confuse the public.
"Malaking pampagulo ang nangyayari," he said. "It muddies the waters about
what is in fact the evidence that is presented in court."
Aquino has made a number of public statements against Corona.
In a speech at the La Consolacion College in Manila, he denounced Corona for
allegedly lying about his wealth by showing the discrepancies in his statements
of assets, liabilities and net worth.
During the 33rd anniversary of the Aurora province, he said he won't stop
attacking Corona.
Marcos believes the President's actions "obfuscate" the issue.
"Ang magiging epekto niyan ay guguluhin lamang ang pag-iisip ng taumbayan
dahil hindi pareho 'yong kanyang mga sinasabi … sa mga hinaharap dito sa korte,"
he said.
"It will confuse the people because they will make their decisions based on
what they hear in the tri-media."
Marcos added that it would be "much better for everyone" if Aquino stopped
making public comments about the trial.
The senator admitted, however, that the rule prohibiting everyone involved in
the impeachment trial from commenting on a case is not being followed.
"Wala namang sumusunod eh. There's no sanction that we're going to do," he
said.
On Wednesday morning, Corona gave interviews defending himself and giving
assurances that he will answer all allegations against him in due time.
Marcos thinks Corona did it because critics have often attacked him through
the media.
"I think it's also because certain elements have chosen to try this case in
the press," Marcos said. "And I suppose the Chief Justice is just responding in
kind."

SUPREME Court (SC) Chief Justice Renato Corona on Wednesday expressed
confidence that he would emerge victorious from his trial before the Senate
impeachment court.
His acquittal, Corona said, would strengthen the judiciary.
"'Pag ako abswelto, lalong tatatag at titibay ang judiciary, ang institution.
Iyon naman ang pinaglalaban natin, hindi ko pinaglalaban ang sarili ko [If I
will be acquitted, the judiciary, the institution, will become stronger and more
stable. That is what we are fighting for, I am not fighting for myself alone],"
he pointed out during an interview over GMA-7.
During the interview, Corona accused a colleague in the High Tribunal,
Associate Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, of lying in her dissenting opinion on a
decision of the SC to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) that allowed
former President and now Rep. Gloria Arroyo of Pampanga province to leave the
country.
In her dissenting opinion, Sereno claimed that the Chief Justice tried to
manipulate the decision that also covered Mrs. Arroyo's request to seek medical
treatment abroad.
Corona said that he really would have wanted the associate justice to testify
before the Senate impeachment court so that he could refute her claims and prove
that she was lying.
"Hinihintay nga namin siyang mag-testigo . . . Hindi namin siya pinipigilan.
In fact, gustung-gusto namin siyang mag-testify doon pero siya ay umatras. Bakit
ko gustong siya ay mag-testify? Eh kasi patutunayan kong siya ay
nagsisinungaling [We have waited for her to testify, we did not prevent her from
doing so. In fact, we really wanted her to testify but she refused. Why did I
want her to testify? Because I wanted to prove that she was lying]," the Chief
Justice added.
Sereno, an appointee of President Benigno Aquino 3rd to the Supreme Court,
had turned down an invitation of the House prosecution panel for her to testify,
saying that for her to do so was moot after the prosecution rested its case.

CHIEF Justice Renato Corona on Wednesday said that his impeachment by the
House of Representatives was caused by his efforts to block a P10-billion
payment demanded by the Cojuangco clan for Hacienda Luisita.
The Supreme Court had ruled that Hacienda Luisita, a vast plantation owned by
the family of President Benigno Aquino 3rd, should be distributed to thousands
of farmer-beneficiaries of the sugar estate.
"Sa mga magsasaka ng Hacienda Luisita, siguro dapat nilang maintindihan na
ang Hacienda Luisita ang puno't dulo ng impeachment complaint na ito. (The
farmers of Hacienda Luisita, maybe they should understand that the Hacienda
Luisita was the end-all and be-all of the impeachment complaint against me),"
Corona said.
Malacañang immediately denied the charges of the Chief Justice.
Its spokesman, Edwin Lacierda, said that it was not the Hacienda Luisita
issue but a temporary restraining order on a watch list order issued by the
Department of Justice against former President Gloria Arroyo that prompted
President Aquino to press for Corona's ouster.
The watch list order prevented Mrs. Arroyo, now a lawmaker representing her
native province of Pampanga, from leaving the country.
The ex-leader is under hospital arrest pending resolution of the unbailable
electoral- sabotage charges against her.
Lacierda said that it was the "lapdog loyalty" of Corona that prompted the
executive branch and the House of Representatives to seek his removal from
office through impeachment.
He belied the allegation of Corona that Mr. Aquino wanted him thrown out from
the Supreme Court for insisting on the P10-billion compensation package for the
farmer-beneficiaries in exchange for distributing the 4,335-hectare Hacienda
Luisita.
Lacierda accused Corona of resorting to "askal kalye" (street dog behavior)
when the Chief Justice publicly asked Mr. Aquino to reveal his mental health, as
is required of a President.
