Not even the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona is stopping the
plans of Corona's defense spokesperson Karen Jimeno for Valentine's Day.
Speaking to ANC, Jimeno said she will be having dinner with her husband
tonight right after the trial hearing at the Senate.
Jimeno married her husband, investment banker Evan McBride, a week before the
trial started last January 16.
"We've known each other for about 3-and-a-half years before we got married,"
she told ANC's "Headstart."
Jimeno, 31, studied law at the University of the Philippines, and attended
Harvard Law School in the US for her Master of Laws. She married McBride, an
investment banker, on January 7 prompting Supreme Court spokesman Jose Midas
Marquez to remark to the media before the impeachment trial started that Jimeno
will be "spending her honeymoon at the Senate."
Since the start of the trial, she has amassed a following from fans who
admire her intellect and looks. A Facebook fan page entitled "Karen Jimeno
Courtroom Crushie" was created during the first week of the trial.
Asked what keeps her looking fresh, she said: "I don't think I look fresh. I
am already starting to feel the stress."
She also downplayed a joke that she could join the Binibining Pilipinas
beauty pageant. "That's overestimating...I don't believe that," she said.
Would she be interested in hosting a TV show? "No, I think my competence is
being a lawyer and I don't know, I don't see myself doing that," she said.
Will she be having a baby soon? "I think my mom is planning for me to have a
baby very, very soon. She was very upset when I agreed to be spokesperson as
soon as I got married. We're going to try for a baby because she wants a
grandchild."
Jimeno was recently the subject of controversy after it was discovered that
she signed
a manifesto of the UP College of Law protesting Corona's "midnight
appointment" as Chief Justice. The "midnight appointment" included in one of the
8 Articles of Impeachment against Corona.
Jimeno, however, said her support for Corona now is consistent with her
position to support the rule of law. She said while she disagreed with Corona's
"midnight appointment", the Supreme Court had ruled that the law does not cover
appointments to the judiciary.
"If the Supreme Court comes out with a decision, the decision of the majority
and not just Chief Justice Corona, then that becomes part of the law of the land
and we have to uphold it," she said.
Jimeno admits that some relatives were concerned for her when she agreed to
become part of Corona's defense team. She said she respects people who say they
admire her but think she's working for the wrong side.
"I just hope he [referring to a commenter] still respects the law and the
process. In the end, when we see all the evidence, we hope we can prove him
wrong," she said.
