MANILA, FEBRUARY 18, 2012
(ABS-CBN) By Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News - Malacañang said
President Aquino's speech on Thursday at a pulong bayan with university students
was not a call for the people to take it to the streets against Chief Justice
Renato Corona.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the President was merely
asking the people to "be informed" and "make a stand."
"Wala pong ganun," Valte said, when asked if the President was calling for a
people power-style demonstration on the streets.
"If you go through the speech, malinaw po ang sinabi ng Pangulo that 'I have
faith in the proceedings.' Very explicit po 'yun. All the President was asking
for was to take stand, be informed, know what is happening."
The Palace also defended the President from the perception the President may
have violated Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile's admonition that the merits of
the impeachment case should not be discussed outside the impeachment court.
Valte said the admonition was addressed to the parties to the case.
"That admonition of the Senate President was intended for the parties...There
has been no formal gag order that has been issued and even then, technically,
the President is not a party to the impeachment," Valte said.
She said the President was not exerting pressure on the senator-judges by
enumerating Corona's alleged misdeeds in his speech.
"We believe that the senator-judges are fairly independent for them to make
their own assessment of the evidence that is brought before the Senate sitting
as an impeachment court.
The President may be the president but he also the right to express his
position on certain things that involve the nation," she said.

While Noy focuses on politics, prices skyrocket — Magsaysay
By Charlie V. Manalo 02/17/2012
A staunch critic of President Aquino in the House of Representatives
criticized yesterday the Aquino administration for letting inflation get out of
hand while it focuses on the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona and its
political agenda.
Zambales Rep. Ma. Milagros "Mitos" Magsaysay said the House
minority has been constantly reminding the government that if it does not do
anything about skyrocketing oil prices, it will have an impact on the prices of
goods in the market.
"Now here we are stuck in this predicament — prices of sardines and other
goods are beginning to rise already which will start an avalanche of subsequent
price hikes — all because the administration failed to prepare safeguards to
cushion the people from the impact of inflation," Magsaysay said.
Economic experts have projected inflation to rise compared to 2011 due to
geopolitical uncertainties in the world, owing mainly the conflict in the Middle
East which is considered the main supplier of oil in the world.
Magsaysay said that this is not a new development because the conflicts have
been going on for some time and has steadily been affecting the prices of
petroleum products in the market.
"Our reminders and suggestions have all fallen under deaf ears. It is natural
for high oil prices to cause a ripple effect in the production and distribution
of goods because industries use energy and oil to transport and produce their
goods. These businesses will not allow themselves to simply absorb the impact of
the cost and not pass it on to the consumers," Magsaysay lamented. "Months have
passed of the same trend, but there is still no feasible solution implemented by
the government — so far it has been all talk of development and progress while
citizens continue to suffer from the impact of inflation."
What is surprising, the solon said, is that despite constant calls and
studies that indicate that the people's wages are not growing in proportion to
the GDP, or that the country's workforce is not getting as well compensated as
their Asian counterparts, the government is not doing anything about it, and as
a result, the people are falling victim to the quicksand that is inflation.
They are being hit from all sides, electricity, food, fares, gasoline and
LPG. The prices of all the things that they require are all increasing but their
means to supports these needs — their income and livelihood are becoming
inadequate to support them, all because the government's priorities are focused
on ousting a chief justice who went against its wishes, and persecuting the
former administration," the Zambales solon averred.
