FEB 22 USHERS LENT: MANILA ARCHBISHOP
CALLS URGES LENTEN FASTING

MANILA, FEBRUARY 21, 2012 (PHILSTAR) By Helen Flores - Manila
Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle called on the faithful yesterday to fast
during the Lenten season and help the Catholic Church feed thousands of
malnourished children in the country.
Tagle made the appeal in a pastoral letter issued yesterday ahead of the
observance of Ash Wednesday on Feb. 22.
"Ash Wednesday ushers in the season of Lent. As we welcome this season of
renewal, let us be united with all of God's people, for we all share the need
for continued conversion as we move away from sin and move toward Christ," Tagle
said.
"We are called upon to support each other in solidarity by praying, fasting
and giving alms to the poor as we undertake our conversion journey in
preparation for Easter," he said.
Tagle said Pope Benedict XVI, in his 2011 World Mission Sunday message,
emphasized that it is part of the mission of the Church to "contribute to
improving the living conditions of people most affected by problems of poverty,
malnutrition especially among the children, disease and lack of health care and
education services."
"In our archdiocese, we are actively supporting the Pondo ng Pinoy's
HAPAG-ASA, a feeding program for hungry and malnourished children, where
children six months to 12 years old are fed once a day, five days a week for six
months with nutritious food," Tagle said. Their parents are provided with basic
skills that improve their capacity to care for their children and livelihood and
skills training to provide them access to employment and income generating
activities, he said.
HAPAG-ASA was able to feed more than 200,000 hungry and malnourished children
nationwide last year.
In the Archdiocese of Manila, the program was able to feed a total of 2,910
malnourished children. For this year, the archdiocese is targeting to feed
2,000.
"It only takes P10 a day or P1,200 for six months to feed one child," Tagle
said.
"Looking the hungry child in the eye, we see God calling out to us to feed
that child. We are called to love by sharing our food to the hungry," Tagle
said.
"May I therefore appeal to you, my brothers and sisters, to donate to
HAPAG-ASA's FAST2FEED 40K and help raise P40 million to feed 40,000 hungry and
malnourished children, not only from our archdiocese but from other areas as
well. Whatever little act of kindness we do for the least of His brethren, we do
it for Him," he said.
FROM THE TRIBUNE
Palace hints at no Lenten ceasefire with CJ
02/20/2012
Not even the Holy Week would slow down Malacanang from keeping its tirades
against Chief Justice Renato Corona as a top Palace official yesterday said
President Aquino is not keen on a Lenten ceasefire in what appears to be an
off-court word war between the two institutional heads.
Deputy presidential spokesman Abigail Valte described such consistency of the
Presidents assault on the chief magistrate as something that would make the
people aware on the issue.
Echoing what the President had always been saying in his recent speeches,
Valte said the Chief Executives acts do not constitute a personal attack but an
act of simplifying the issue for ordinary Filipinos.
It seems that the President has answered the so-called ceasefire and his
thoughts If and when I feel I can clarify certain things for the public, he will
not hesitate to do so, Valte told a press briefing aired over the government-run
Radyo ng Bayan, when asked about the prospect of a Holy Week ceasefire.
Aquino, who was quoted by dzRB as saying he saw nothing wrong with his
criticism against Corona, saying such criticisms were within the essence of
democracy, claimed that his confrontational remarks are not in anyway attacking
Corona as a person, adding what he is shooting at is the system of corruption.

Valte earlier shrugged off criticisms on the Presidents blatant display of
defying a gag order restricting discussions on the merits of the ongoing
impeachment case trial at the Senate, by saying that the President is not
covered by the gag order.
Aquino, who visited Aurora province to inaugurate a P509-million hospital
funded by the Japanese government, has seen invitations to speak as a forum to
expound on what the government claims as evidence enough to warrant the removal
of the chief magistrate.
In one of his speaking engagements, Aquino even used a Power Point
presentation visual aid in discussing the Corona impeachment case now being
heard by the Senate, acting as impeachment court.
Interestingly, Valte said aside from the President, officials under the
Executive Department are not covered by the gag order of the Senate.
When asked whether officials under the Executive Department would be willing
to testify in the ongoing impeachment trial, Valte said they will heed when
issued a subpoena something that appears contrary to an earlier text message of
presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda, who told the Tribune that he doesnt see
any reason for them to be summoned. Fernan J. Angeles
