MANILA, JANUARY 4, 2012 (TRIBUNE) EDITORIAL - House
prosecutors deny vehemently that the impeachment complaint against Chief Justice
Renato Corona was the handiwork of Noynoy Aquino, or the Liberal Party (LP) and
Justice Antonio Carpio and his partners, saying that the complaint was filed and
is being prosecuted by the soveriegn Filipino people, according to the
congressmen who claim themselves to be the sovereign Filipino people.
They also claim that the complaint was legitimately and personally verified
by the 188 congressmen who had signed it.
Now that's really a strange thing to say, considering that it is verifiable
fact and recorded in media, that Noynoy himself, after the CJ was impeached by
the House, bragged that he was the brains behind the impeachment of Corona.
Also recorded in the media is the fact that Speaker Sonny Belmonte was quoted
as saying that he had sent a text message to Noynoy, to the effect that the
required number has not only been met but has also been surpassed, with Noynoy
replying to his text with a thank you message.
Besides, there is no denying the fact that the move to impeach Corona came
from Noynoy, as he was already giving the House clear signals through his
announcements that he wants the CJ impeached, using as his excuse, the temporary
restraining order issued by the Supreme Court on the Justice department's
unconstitutional hold departure order, even when it was evident that the real
reason behind Noynoy's move to have Corona impeached was due to the fact that
the SC ruled against the Cojuangco-Aquino's Hacienda Luisita, where the clan
would now have to parcel out the land and pay the tenants to boot.
Despite all these recorded facts, the prosecutors still insist that it is
they, the "sovereign" people, who filed the complaint on their own — without any
meddling from their patron, Noynoy.
Since they deny what can be proven as the truth, why shoud they be believed
when they claim that the 188 congressmen legitimately verified the complaint,
especially given the fact that it is an impossibility for 188 congressmen to
read all 57 pages or so of the complaint in less than two hours, apart from the
fact that even some of those who signed, such as leftist party-lister Teddy
Casiño was quoted as having admitted that he did not read it but signed it
anyway.
As for the claim of the prosecutors that ambitious CJ in waiting Carpio and
his partners have nothing to do with this impeachment move, well, who would be
benefitting from a removal of Corona if not the pro-Noynoy justices?
There have already been reports that with Corona out of the picture and with
Carpio being appointed CJ, losing VP bet Mar Roxas may just be declared vice
president, replacing VP Jojo Binay, as the electoral protest is still ongoing at
the SC acting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET). And voila, there
goes the strengthened the 12 years rule of the LP in Malacañang!
Long before the impeachment of Corona, and even before his appointment as CJ
in May 2010, leaks against Corona, and dutifully reported by a pro-Carpio,
pro-Firm Newsbreak, now known as a Rappler reporter, surfaced. Just where then
could the leak have come from, if not from you-know-who already.
As for the impeachment not being an LP move, it was also reported then, that
the LP, in a meeting, did not want to make the impeachment appear as an LP move,
which is why the LP leaders tapped other allies for the impeachment and yes,
with a promise of more pork in 2012.
But as it is always said, the best laid plans of mice and mean can go awry,
and it appears that the Noynoy-LP plan did go awry, to a certain extent.
They thought that with Corona impeached, he would go the way of Ombudsman
Merceditas Guiterrez, which is why the House didn't put too much thought to
making a solid case against the CJ.
But the CJ did not resign and is in fighting legal form and with a pre-trial
in the offing, prosecutors who claim to have a strong case against the CJ and
evidence against him, will have to come up with that evidence during the
pre-trial.
They may just come up empty-handed.
