MUSLIMS in Mindanao took part in a traditional Catholic festival for the
first time at the weekend highlighting a growing desire for reconciliation and
peaceful coexistence on the restive island.
They joined the 34th "halad" celebration, a two-day feast honoring Sto. Niño
(Child Jesus), in Midsayap town in North Cotabato province.
Muslim villagers from Mamasapano in nearby Maguindanao province, along with
local revelers, began the festival on Saturday with traditional dancing along
the major streets of Midsayap.
One of the Muslim participants said they wanted to join the festivities as a
show of solidarity and to promoting interfaith interaction so "peaceful
coexistence" can prevail among Muslims, Christians and indigenous people in the
majority Catholic nation.
Kamsa, another Muslim participant, said he did not mind that some of his
"Christian brethren" in the parade were carrying images of Sto. Niño.
"After all, we Muslims revere Jesus as one of the great Messengers of Allah,"
Kamsa said, as he thanked Midsayap Mayor Manuel Rabara for inviting them to the
feast.
The feast ended Sunday with a communal dinner comprising local dishes many of
which were cooked and offered free of charge by local households.

Sinulog Foundation loses P1.6m to burglars

THE Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI), organizer of the Sinulog festival
activities, lost more than P1.6 million to burglars a day after the grand parade
on Sunday.
The P1.6 million cash, which was forcibly taken, was placed inside a vault at
the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC) office.
The SFI initially reported that it lost only close to a million pesos but
after the awarding ceremonies Monday afternoon, it was found out that the
P757,000 allotted for the performers of the Sinulog grand finale was also placed
inside the vault.
SFI Executive Director Ricky Ballesteros said ticket sales of the CCSC, cash
incentive for one of the staff of the SFI, a camera and the P757,000 talent fee
were among those carted off by the burglars.
The suspects, who used a cutter to open the vault, also took the P11,000 and
$30 collected during the Sunday mass at the CCSC.
