'ANTI' CAMPAIGN GOT NASTY: CORONA'S WIKIPEDIA
DEFACED; REF AS 'THIEF JUSTICE'

MANILA, JANUARY
6,
2012 (INQUIRER) By Christian V. Esguerra Philippine
Daily Inquirer - The campaign to unseat Chief Justice Renato
Corona is getting nasty.
The Wikipedia entry on the country's embattled top magistrate was repeatedly
defaced Tuesday, with one revision describing Corona as "Thief Justice of the
Philippines" in what could be a reference to his being an alleged "midnight"
appointee of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The changes at the user-generated online encyclopedia came less than two
weeks before the Senate is to begin the impeachment trial of Corona for alleged
betrayal of public trust and culpable violations of the Constitution.
The nasty entries were also made amid the controversy over the doctorate
degree Corona earned from the University of Santo Tomas earlier this year.
One revision referred to Corona's impeachment at the House of Representatives
last December 12. It said, "The Filipino people is hoping for his impeachment
(meaning conviction) at the Senate impeachment trial."
The entry was followed by a sentence saying, "Rumors are circulating that the
Supreme Court Administrator—'Midas Marquez'— is having an intimate relationship
with the Chief Justice…"
The malicious information about Corona had been removed as of Wednesday. But
anyone could still view the changes by clicking the "revision history" on the
Wikipedia entry. By its nature, the website allows users to make changes in its
entries.
Corona and his legal team are in the thick of preparations for the
impeachment trial, which is set to begin when the Senate resumes session on
January 16. On that day, senators are also expected to decide on his motion for
a preliminary hearing over concerns that many of the congressmen who signed the
impeachment complaint had not actually read it.
Before Corona's trial could officially begin, an new news Web site,
rappler.com, came out with a story alleging that UST had bent its own rules by
granting him a doctorate degree with top honors even though he did not submit a
dissertation.
The story, which was also published in by the Inquirer on New Year's Day,
also claimed that Corona had gone beyond the residency limit to complete the
course.
Marquez earlier said the rappler.com story "may be linked" to the upcoming
trial of Corona. "It comes at the most interesting time. Maybe it's all part of
it," he said in a press briefing.
UST said Corona had attended all classes and completed all requirements for
the Ph.D. But instead of a dissertation, a scholarly treatise on environmental
law was delivered by Corona before a big audience, according to the school.
"There is no truth to the allegation that the University of Santo Tomas broke
its rules to favor Chief Justice Renato Corona who graduated with the degree of
Doctor of Laws from the University," it said in a statement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renato_Corona

WHAT IS
WIKIPEDIA

Wikipedia is the biggest online encyclopedia offering multilingual, open
access and free content in multiple languages.
Officially launched on January 15, 2001, it is now the largest, fastest
growing and most popular general reference work currently available on the
Internet.
As of November 2007, Wikipedia has over 9 million articles in 253 languages,
written collaboratively by volunteers around the world.
Wikipedia.org is also ranked among the top ten most visited websites
worldwide.
Furthermore, it hints to an improved form of Web 2.0, with regard to its
user-friendly interface and unparalleled information database.
At the time of its launch in 2001, Wikipedia needed a logo design which would
represent its peculiarity and exclusive initiative on the Internet. Hence, Jimmy
'Jimbo' Wales, founder of Wikipedia, used an American flag, Old Glory, as the
temporary Wikipedia logo, which was widely criticized.
Wikipedia is an online free-content encyclopedia that you can edit and
contribute to.
Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales has described Wikipedia as "an effort to
create and distribute a multilingual free encyclopedia of the highest quality to
every single person on the planet in his or her own language."
Wikipedia exists to bring knowledge to everyone who seeks it.
Who owns Wikipedia?
Who owns the Encyclopedia? The articles hosted on this site are released by
and can be edited by anybody who has a user id on wiki.
They're authors under the CC-BY-SA license (and
in most cases, also the GNU Free
Documentation License), so the articles are free content and may be
reproduced freely under the same license.
See Wikipedia:Copyrights
and Wikipedia:Readers' FAQ for information on how you can use Wikipedia
content.
By law the contributions are still owned by the people who donated them.
These people are not bound by the license and can use their property in the way
they like. However media with multiple authors require permission from every
contributor to use them differently from the terms of the Wikipedia license.

Who owns the Web site?
Wikipedia is managed by a non-profit parent organization, The Wikimedia
Foundation, which also manages the operation of Wikipedia's sister projects,
including Wiktionary (a
wiki dictionary), Wikibooks
(textbooks), and others, and owns all of their domain names. Previously, the
site was hosted on the servers of Bomis, Inc., a company mostly
owned by Jimmy Wales.

With the announcement of the Wikimedia Foundation on June 20, 2003, the
ownership of all domain names was transferred to the Foundation. The site is run
by the community of Wikipedians guided by the principles articulated by Jimmy
Wales, including, for example, an adherence to a neutral
point of view.
Who is responsible for the articles on Wikipedia?
You are! Actually, you could even edit this very FAQ, so long as each edit is
helpful. This is a collaborative effort.
Millions of people have contributed information to different parts of this
project, and anyone can do so, including you. All you need is to know how to
edit a page, and have some encyclopedic knowledge, which you would like to
share.
The encyclopedia provides users with a certain amount of freedom. You can
learn who is responsible for the most recent versions of any given page by
clicking on the "Page history" link. Nevertheless, if you spot an error in the
latest revision of an article, you are highly encouraged to be bold and correct
it.
This practice is one of the basic review mechanisms that maintains the
reliability of the encyclopedia. As a result, Wikipedia has become one of the
most extensive information libraries available on the Internet.
If you are uncertain, or find the wording confusing, quote the material on
the associated talk page and leave a question for the next person. This helps
reduce errors, inaccuracies, or misleading wording more quickly and is highly
appreciated by the community itself.
How can I contact the project?
Given the massively-collaborative nature of the project, there is no single
point of contact.
If you send an e-mail to an individual board or staff member, they will
likely just forward it to the group of Wikipedia volunteers who answer reader
inquiries.
You can reach those volunteers yourself, by e-mailing
infowikimedia.org.
Alternatively, if you want to communicate with a specific user, you can leave
a message on his or her personal talk page.
The talk page for User:Jane Doe is located at User talk:Jane Doe.
Many Wikipedians have also registered their e-mail addresses, which you can
use by clicking the "E-mail this user" link on their user pages.
In addition, each article has a talk page. Use the discussion link at the top
of each article to get to its talk page.
