DECISIONS PROPERLY'/ WARNING: CHEAP FOOD
MANILA, DECEMBER
12, 2011 (BULLETIN)
Whenever he feels stressed, President Benigno S. Aquino III fires a few
rounds at the shooting range.
Practical shooting at least once a week helps him "make decisions properly,"
the President said in an impromptu speech Saturday at the Philippine Air Force
(PAF) Invitational Shoot Fest and Firing Range Blessing at Villamor Airbase in
Pasay City.
He said practical shooting has been his "tension reliever" when he feels the
pressure from work.
"At least once a week I can temporarily divert my attention away from the
country's problems here and abroad. I think it helps me make decisions
properly," said Aquino, a PAF reservist.
Likening himself to a car, the President said he cannot be always in high
gear or the vehicle would deteriorate fast.
Reports said Aquino usually spends time during Saturdays at the firing range
of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) park in Malacañang.
The President, who is being criticized for allegedly putting his "kabarilan
(shooting range buddies)" in key government positions, participated in the PAF
shootfest.
In his Christmas message to the Air Force personnel, Aquino said "the real
spirit of the Yuletide season is being able to be with your respective
families."
"Remember that it is not exactly the surroundings that are important nor the
food that you will be eating, but the idea that we are here for each other," he
said.
Consumers warned on cheap foodBy MARIO B.
CASAYURAN December 10, 2011, 4:45pm
MANILA, Philippines — Watch out. The seemingly cheap foodstuff you buy to
save a few pesos may turn out to be unhygienic. It may either put your life at
risk or you land at the hospital that will slap you expensive medical bills.
Sen. Francis "Kiko'' Pangilinan, chairman of the Senate food and
agriculture committee, issued this warning as he asked consumers to be on the
lookout for unhygienic foodstuffs as the Christmas season approaches.
Pangilinan, likewise, asked government agencies to be on the lookout for
smuggled goods, particularly meat products, vegetables, and other in-demand
items, that compete with local industries or are dangerous to health.
He specifically asked the Bureau of Customs (BoC), Department of Trade and
Industry (DTI), Department of Agriculture (DA) and local government units (LGUs)
to do their duty to ensure the health and well-being of consumers.
''Kapag masyadong mababa and presyo ng mga bibilhin sa merkado, kailangan
nating tignan kung saan ba ito nanggagaling at baka smuggled ang mga ito. Kapag
hindi natin maseguro ang source ng mga bilihin, may posibilidad na iba rito ay
delikado sa kalusugan ng mga mamamayan (If the price of the goods for sale is
very low, consumers should try to determine where these goods came from as they
may be smuggled goods. Worse, there is a possibility that these goods may be
dangerous to health)," he said.
Pangilinan, likewise, cautioned the public against ''botcha'' (the so-called
double dead meat products) that could be sold by unscrupulous traders to
capitalize on the holidays.
The agriculture committee chairman stressed that government agencies should
continue protecting the livelihood of those in the agriculture sector against
assaults by those who smuggle products of farmers of other countries.
