MANILA,
NOVEMBER 16,
2011 (MANILA TIMES) President Benigno Aquino 3rd will fly
today to Bali, Indonesia, to attend an Association of Southeast Asian Nations
(Asean) summit to be held at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center there until
November 19.
Malacañang deputy spokesman Abigail Valte on Tuesday said that President
Aquino will leave at 3 p.m. on Wednesday for the summit where he will meet with
Asean as well as world leader, including US President Barack Obama, Chinese
Premier Wen Jiabao, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Japanese Prime
Minister Yoshihiko Noda and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
The President, according to Ambassador Wilfrido Villacorta, Philippine
Permanent Representative to Asean, will promote programs and action plans for
the protection and assurance of benefits of migrant workers.
Among Southeast Asian countries, the Philippines has the highest number of
workers in foreign lands. Villacorta said that the Philippines is being looked
up to as a role model by its neighboring countries and fellow members in the
Asean on laws where protecting migrant workers was concerned.
"Tinitingala tayo ng mga ibang bansang nagpapadala rin ng mga manggagawa sa
ibang bansa tulad ng Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India [We are being looked up to by
other countries that also send their citizens abroad to work like Indonesia, Sri
Lanka and India]," he added.
Villacorta said that the Philippine government has always been serious in
pushing for the protection of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) that number about
700,000 in the Asian region alone.
Migrant workers' protection is seen as one of the various advocacies of Mr.
Aquino that will be discussed during his meetings with counterparts in Asean.

Villacorta said that besides economic stability and protection for citizens,
Asean also pursues fostering a caring and sharing community for the 10-member
group [Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the
Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam].
