SHAMCEY SUPSUP SHINES BEYOND MS. UNIVERSE
MANILA, OCTOBER 19, 2011 (TIMES) Written by : Euden Valdez Staff Writer - SHE was a reluctant beauty queen who achieved what most pageant veterans could only dream about, and when she won 3rd runner-up in the Miss Universe,
Shamcey Supsup not only brought honor to the country, she also became a shining beacon of hope and inspiration to every Filipina in the world.
Although she admits that she only joined the Bb. Pilipinas to give in to her mother's request, Shamcey says she still believes that beauty pageants are still relevant these days.
When asked the question during a recent press lunch at The Peninsula Manila's Salon de Ning, Shamcey answered with the same poise she displayed during the Miss Universe's final Q&A. "I think beauty pageants are still relevant. Aside from being able to show that we're not just beautiful but we also have something to say, and we have a purpose, a bigger purpose in life.
"And I think through beauty pageants, we are able to showcase our talents, we are able to show that we are confident, that we are proud of who we are. It's something that we, in the modern world, we still appreciate beauty. And I think that's one way of appreciating what God has created and celebrating women in general."
Shamcey indeed proved that her beauty has a purpose as she was introduced as the newest celebrity spokesperson for Avon—a company long recognized as the company for women.
"I am happy to be part of empowering women and to be working for a company for women," Shamcey shared during the announcement of the good news.
Bob Briddon, Avon senior vice president for Asia Pacific and China, and general manager for the Philippines, then said to Shamcey, "You epitomize everything we are looking for in Filipino women in terms of beauty inside and outside . . . the sense of pride in the things that you do, and also the fact that you represent the Philippines to the world."
True to being a woman with essence, Shamcey revealed that what she is most excited about the partnership are the advocacies of Avon.
"To be able to help and support the program they [Avon] have, like the breast cancer [campaign] and other projects like green movement and domestic violence. So I'm so happy that aside from just endorsing, I'll be able to help in these causes," Shamcey explained.
Shamcey joins Avon's roster of impressive list of international celebrity endorsers like Reese Witherspoon, Patrick Demsey and Fergie Fergusson and local endorsers Ruffa Guitierrez, Lea Salonga and Angel Locsin.
Despite all the recognition and accolades being showered upon her, Shamcey humbly said that everything has yet to sink in.
Shamcey said, "I don't think I'll ever get over [it]. Even winning Binibining Pilipinas, it hasn't sunk in at all. And now, Miss Universe came, I still feel the same. Maybe that's why it has never sunk in yet.
"The only thing that's changes is how people treat me, but me personally, when I am at home, it's still the same Shamcey that most of my friends and my family know."
