TO PINOYS ABROAD: CFO HOLDS GLOBAL SUMMIT OF OVERSEAS FILIPINOS
MANILA, SEPTEMBER 10, 2011 (PHNO) CFO PRESS RELEAS By Gertie Ampil Tirona - The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) is spearheading the Global Summit of Filipinos in the Diaspora on September 27-29, 2011 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Manila.
As the government agency mandated to promote the interests of Filipino emigrants and permanent residents abroad, the CFO will provide a forum for at least 500 representatives of the estimated 8.5 million overseas Filipinos and their local counterparts to tap into their respective experiences and expertise to help the country move forward.
Recognizing the phenomenal growth of diaspora communities worldwide and their proven capability to contribute to their host countries' productivity, the CFO is launching its flagship program under the Aquino administration during the Summit. Tagged as D2D or Diaspora to Development – the theme says it all: "migration and development" must go hand in hand. The heretofore lamented Brain Drain syndrome is now an opportunity to be seized to Brain Gain – Para sa Bayan!
Since its establishment in 1980, the Commission has served as the gateway where emigrants and reuniting families leaving for abroad or finally coming back to the Philippines have come through for assistance in good and bad times – to extend unsolicited donations during national calamities for devastated hometowns or to seek guidance in moments of personal distress or involving families left behind.
Given this experience, the CFO is gearing up its frontline services to address the Filipino diaspora community's heightened interest and concern for the motherland. While the harnessing of diaspora resources for development is a global trend that the Jews, the Chinese, the Indians, the Mexicans, and other migrant groups have long realized, it is also true that deep in the Filipino soul, regardless of country of residence and employment, lurks that unique bayanihan spirit.
Seen in this light is the coming together of the CFO's partners to turn the Global Summit into a pioneering success -- the National Federation of Filipino Associations in America (NaFFAA), the US Pinoys for Good Governance (USP4GG) and Youth Leaders in the Diaspora (YouLeaD) and other networks of overseas Filipinos in Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
The Summit is supported by ActivAsia Incorporated as event partner, the ABS-CBN network as the official media partner, The Medical City as the official health care provider, Vibal Publishing House as the official publisher, and other government agencies such as the Philippine Retirement Authority, the Department of Tourism and the Department of Foreign Affairs.
All overseas Filipinos and their successor generations, including those who have returned to the Philippines, local Filipinos with overseas-based relatives, and public and private sector "migration and development" advocates in the country -- are invited to participate in this trailblazing event.
