MIKE ARROYO LEFT FOR GERMANY TO LOOK FOR STEM CELL DOCTOR
MANILA, SEPTEMBER 21, 2011 (STANDARD) FORMER First Gentlemen Jose Miguel Arroyo left quietly Sunday night on board Cathay Pacific flight CX902 for Munich, Germany via Hong Kong to seek a doctor who is knowledgeable in stem cell research and treatment.
Arroyo checked in at the Cathay Pacific counter and immediately proceeded to the immigration counter where he presented his travel documents and a copy of the Department of Justice order lifting Watch List Order 2011-410 against him.
Airport personnel were surprised to see Arroyo carrying his handcarried luggage sans security personnel and protocol officers facilitating his airport departure.
He was accompanied on his trip by two male medical assistants who would assist him with his checked-in luggage since his doctors had prohibited him from carrying heavy luggage.
In an interview before boarding his flight at Gate 7 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1, Arroyo told the Manila Standard that one of the assistants would carry his luggage while the other one would carry a CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure, a portable oxygen concentrator used to treat apnea. It includes a mask worn during sleep to increase blood saturation.
Arroyo had surgery for a dissecting aortic aneurysm in 2007. He was also hospitalized last April and went to Hong Kong for a check-up last month for the same condition.
The watchlist order against Arroyo was lifted after the Supreme Court stopped its implementation last September 1.
Earlier, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the DoJ cannot prevent Arroyo from leaving.
In an interview at the NAIA Terminal 2 during the departure ceremony for President Benigno Aquino III, De Lima said there was "no existing [watch list order] against him" to prevent from leaving the country. Eric B. Apolonio
