MANILA BIZ CLUB EXPECTS ECONOMY TO PERFORM BETTER OVER NEXT 12 MONTHS
MANILA, AUGUST 9, 2011 (MALAYA) Business expects the economy to perform better over the next 12 months due to the improved business climate and reduction of corruption, the Executive Outlook Survey for the second semester this year conducted by the Makati Business Club shows.
The businessmen want the government to pursue graft charges against former President Gloria Arroyo.
The survey was conducted between July 19 and August 2 and participated in by more than 10 percent of MC members to capture their economic outlook and opinion on issues concerning public governance.
An overwhelming majority of 76 percent of the respondents said they expect the economy to perform better over the next 12 months.
Slightly above half, 53 percent, said corruption in government has been reduced over the past 12 months while 38 percent said the incidence of corruption has not gone down.
A great majority (80 percent) of the respondents said graft and corruption charges should be pursued against Arroyo, while 8 percent said charges should not pursued.
The respondents gave the highest net satisfaction scores to the following government agencies: the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Department of Finance, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Department of Health, among 45 government offices and agencies.
The Ombudsman, the Sandiganbayan, the appeals and lower courts, the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Customs received the lowest net satisfaction scores for their performance from July 2010 to June 2011.
STATEMENT of Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda:
On the Makati Business Club's Executive Outlook Survey for the Second Semester of 2011 , [Released on August 8, 2011]
The Aquino administration is grateful for yet another vote of confidence from the public as the Makati Business Club (MBC) releases the results of its second semester 2011 Executive Outlook Survey, conducted from 19 July to 2 August 2011.
64% of the MBC respondents acknowledge that the business environment has improved over the past year. A more overwhelming majority—76% of the respondents—believes that the economy will perform even better over the next 12 months. The MBC members likewise cited agencies tasked with enhancing the Philippines' business environment, and it is worth mentioning that the performance of the Department of Health (DOH), a pillar of our social service agenda, has garnered their praise. The MBC members' optimism and positive outlook on the country reaffirm that the government's efforts to level the playing field in all sectors and secure greater opportunity for inclusive growth are bearing fruit.
The administration also notes that the MBC shares the sentiments of the rest of the Filipino people, as 80% of the respondents believe that graft and corruption charges should be pursued against former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
We are also united in the view that although the nation has achieved palpable progress, there is much work left for us to do. It is worth noting that the agencies with the lowest net satisfaction scores are those where corruption has been most deeply entrenched. We are hard at work to root out corruption in all of our agencies, and the next couple of months will no doubt manifest the reforms we have established, beginning with the appointment of our new ombudsman, Conchita Carpio-Morales.
The support and encouragement extended to us by the Makati Business Club, the latest from the Filipino people, can only cement our nation's collective determination to remain on the straight and righteous path toward equitable progress.
