PHL POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY CAMPUS READY TO ERUPT WITH VIOLENT PROTEST
MANILA, JULY 11, 2011 (STANDARD) Court stops ex-rebel from taking PUP post.
THE assumption of Edicio de la Torre of the presidency of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines was again held up on Friday when a Manila court extended an order stopping him from assuming that post for another 17 days.
Judge Silvino Pampilo of Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 26 issued the order on the petition of Polytechnic president Dante Guevarra, whose four-year term was not renewed by the school's board.
Pampilo said he was extending a three-day restraining order issued by Executive Judge Amor Reyes "to avoid or prevent the eruption of violence in the PUP campuses."
Guevarra, whose contract ended July 5, claimed that the school's evaluation committee led by Emerlinda Roman had abused the search process by relying on qualitative and subjective analyses instead of using quantitative evaluation based on statistics.
The school's Roman committee did not renew Guevarra's appointment when he failed to obtain the perfect score of 10.
Pampilo issued the stay order despite a motion by the Office of the Solicitor General, representing Polytechnic University, seeking the judge's inhibition as he used to be a professor at the PUP College of Law, where Guevarra had endorsed his appointment.
Classes in the school's Sta. Mesa, Manila, campus was disrupted this week after students sympathetic to Guevarra walked out.
Dela Torre, a former priest and rebel, is the private sector's representative to the Polytechnic board. He is president of Civil Network for Education Reform Inc. and once served as director-general of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority. Macon Ramos-Araneta
