MAKATI CITY, JUNE 10, 2011 (PERLAS & LUNA PR GROUP) By Jayce C. Perlas- June marks the anniversary of our nation's independence, the hard-earned triumph of our heroes after hundreds of years of struggle, blood, sweat and tears.
And this year, as the whole nation commemorates this occasion, Ayala Land celebrates Philippine Independence in Makati with more than a month-long celebration of the colors and energy of the Filipino spirit.
This year also marks the 150th birth anniversary of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal (photo from Google). Ayala Land aims to honor the memory of his heroism. With these two celebrations combined, Colors of Freedom at Makati is an explosion of vibrant colors and lively energy that will be filled with art, music and learning.
On June 10, three of Makati CBD's underpasses will transform into art galleries showcasing different symbolisms of nationalism centered on Jose Rizal.
In partnership with the Center for Art, New Ventures and Sustainable Development (CANVAS), each underpass will give pedestrians more than just a pleasurable walking experience, but a journey to artistic renditions of Rizal.
Artworks will be lining underpass walls with works of contemporary Filipino artists like Raymond Legaspi, Juanito Torres, Baguio-based Leonard Aguinaldo, sculptor Michael Cacnio, National Artist BenCab and more, as curated by Marika B. Constantino.
The colourful rediscovery of Rizal in our history will be exhibited in three underpasses, with distinct themes for each underpass.
Remembering Rizal in Legazpi will highlight various depictions of the national hero, Rethinking Rizal in Sedeño will showcase critical renditions of him, and Reviewing Rizal at Salcedo will display imagery that pertains to his works and ideals.
Along with this project, Ayala Land will also be donating children's books published by CANVAS to Makati public schools. Moreover, there will also be art exhibits at the Ayala Triangle Gardens. Among the exhibits is a 48-sq meter art expression of the Philippine Flag. In addition, there will be sculptures and art installations commemorating significant moments in our history, compiled and written by the Filipinas Heritage Library with the guidance of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

In the evening of June 10, guests will be entertained with excellent musicality of world class Filipino performers Bituin Escalante, FILharmonika Orchestra and musical director Gerard Salonga in this Freedom Concert that will be staged under the stars.
And on June 11, more exciting activities will happen at Ayala Triangle Gardens as Ayala Land provides workshops such as a sketch fest, kiddie gardening, theatrical storytelling, and paper plane making and contest that the whole family will surely enjoy.
At 8 am, registration starts for Sketch Fest, a sketching competition sponsored by the Manila Bulletin. Then at 10:30 am, a kiddie garden will also be set up for kids to learn about planting through simple modules prepared and delivered by Teacher Ruel, a horticulturist and flower shop owner.
At 11 am, interactive narrators from Trumpets will tell the story of Linggit vs Barracuda, a sure hit for children of all ages. And lastly, there will be an origami workshop on paper planes in partnership with the Japan Foundation. The workshop will be facilitated by an origami artist coming straight from Japan. Families and friends can make and fly paper planes and win in the best Filipino design and longest flight contests.
And on the 15th, another free concert, Ang Tunog Natin, will be held at the ATG. The open air concert will feature some of the most distinguished and promising names in the local music scene.
This concert is sequel to the June 10 open air concert with musical director Gerard Salonga and world-class performers Bituin Escalante and the FILHarmonika Orchestra.
It is also first in the series of OPM concerts to launch Avida Towers San Lorenzo, some of the performers are JimParedes, True Faith, Callalily, 6cyclemind and Pedicab.
With all these activities that families and friends, young and old can surely enjoy, Ayala Land truly gives tribute to Filipino heroism through this world-class celebration of Philippine Independence in Makati .
