PHNO-SP: MAYWEATHER MUST ANSWER DEFAMATION CHARGE

MAYWEATHER MUST ANSWER DEFAMATION CHARGE

MANILA, JUNE 18, 2011 (BULLETIN) Floyd Mayweather Jr. has no other choice but to face Manny Pacquiao's battery of lawyers Friday morning (early Saturday morning in Manila) in a deposition stemming from the defamation suit filed by the Filipino boxing star.

Daniel Petrocelli, lead counsel of Pacquiao, said he "will be pursuing all rights and remedies against Mr. Mayweather for his disobedience of the deposition notice" after learning that Mayweather's camp had filed a request asking that the deposition be postponed until after he fights Victor Ortiz on Sept. 16.

But a Nevada court has denied Mayweather's request for postponement and Petrocelli revealed that Mayweather's lawyers "filed an immediate appeal and informed us that Mr. Mayweather does not intend to appear for his deposition tomorrow."

Petrocelli, however, made it clear that "the filing of an appeal does not excuse Mr. Mayweather's obligation to appear for his deposition."

Petrocelli said "the purpose of the deposition is to confront and examine Mr. Mayweather under oath about his defamatory statements."

Earlier, retired boxing great Oscar De La Hoya and his right-hand man at Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), Richard Schaefer, were also included in the case but Pacquiao withdrew the case against them after GBP issued a public apology and opted to settle with Pacquiao's camp.

Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum said Mayweather has to offer more than just a public apology to persuade Pacquiao to withdraw his case.

Bad blood between Pacquiao and Mayweather stems from their heated rivalry over who's the rightful holder of boxing's mythical title of pound-for-pound king.

Two times efforts failed to arrange a megabuck matchup between Pacquiao and Mayweather owing to the ticklish issue of random drug testing and profit sharing.

Pacquiao is scheduled to face Juan Manuel Marquez in a rubber match on Nov. 12 in Las Vegas.
