APO HIKING JIM PAREDES RECALLS THE BEATLES VISITED PHL IN 1966
MANILA, JUNE 18, 2011 (BULLETIN) Former APO Hiking Society chief songwriter Jim Paredes, a big fan of the Beatles, clearly recalls the day he was near the stage watching the Fab Four perform live in front of Filipino audiences.
That was of course during the group's one and only, also controversial, Manila visit in July 1966.
"The experience was great, though I remember hearing (drummer) Ringo play off-beat probably because of the poor sound system which made it difficult to hear the others," said the singer-songwriter who got a chance to watch The Beatles on that memorable day at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Though the veteran musician remembered hearing the harmonies of John Lennon and Paul McCartney in sync, the audio equipment at that time understandably couldn't handle big venues with screaming fans which The Beatles, having been at the center of 1960s rock 'n roll mayhem, had to deal with while playing live.

It would have been different if they were using 32 Audio-Technica microphones (now distributed locally by Yupangco Electronics through Yamaha and Perfect Pitch stores) which were installed in key areas of Westminster Abbey during the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton last April 29.
Asked if he bothers to listen to prevailing music of today, Jim expressed, "I don't know Lady Gaga. I've totally dropped out. I've never been a fan of music videos because bad songs can be good in videos."
The iconic Manila Sound stalwart launched his solo album "Laro" Friday evening, June 17 at Eastwood Mall Open Park. He will be at Venice Piazza in McKinley Hill, Fort Bonifacio June 18, 8 p.m. Some of his new songs are "OPM Rap," "Ang Ganda Mo," "May Araw Ka Rin," "Sinungaling," "Feeling Guilty," "Libog Lang Yan," "Lumisan Na Siya," "In My Heart," and the carrier single "Butong Pakwan."
Meanwhile in line with McCartney's 69th birthday also on June 18, some Filipino artists displayed their Beatles artworks through the 16th Graphic Expo being held at the SMX Convention Center in Mall of Asia.
Galerie One Workshop. Curated by Ross Capili, the exhibition includes Beatles paintings, digital art, and mixed media as follow-up to the first gathering of Beatlemania artists held at the GSIS Museum last year. The three-day Beatles exhibit ends today (June 18).
