MANILA, JUNE 18, 2011 (MALAYA) PRESIDENT Aquino, an Ateneo alumnus, underscored the role of education as a foundation in nation-building as he congratulated the students, faculty, alumni and officials of De La Salle University (DLSU) on its 100th founding anniversary.

In keynoting the DLSU's centennial celebration at the Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament at DLSU Taft yesterday, the President cited the school's commitment in providing quality education that serves as an important tool in producing the builders and providers of a brighter future.

"Ang mahabang tradisyon ng mataas na kalidad ng edukasyon mula sa DLSU ay nagbubukal sa inyong hangarin na paglingkuran ang kapwa at mag-ambag para sa kapakanan ng bansa," he added.

Aquino cited some DLSU alumni in his Cabinet, including Education Secretary and former DLSU president Armin Luistro, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, Agrarian Reform Secretary Gil delos Reyes, Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim, Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo and National Economic and Development Authority director general Cayetano Paderanga Jr.

President Aquino also expressed gratitude to the DLSU for serving as shelter to the National Movement for Free Elections since 1984.

DLSU also provided the St. Benilde gymnasium as venue for the necrological services for the President's mother, former President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino, in 2009.

DLSU opened its doors on June 15 for the public viewing of a major relic of St. John Baptist de La Salle, patron saint of Christian teachers and founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.

The 292-year old relic is a gift from the Christian Brothers' Institute in Rome to the Philippine District on the occasion of DLSU's 100 years. The veneration of the relic was held yesterday. The relic will be brought to other La Salle schools in the country.

The centerpiece project of the DLSU centennial celebration is the One La Salle Scholarship Fund, a campaign to raise P2 billion to support approximately 18,000 students on full scholarship in 17 La Salle schools nationwide.

Other activities lined up include the benefit concert "Isang Daan, Sangandaan" featuring alumni headed by Gary Valenciano, directed by Rowell Santiago and musical direction by Louie Ocampo.

Lasallian athletes and student artists will also perform, led by the DLSU Chorale, De La Salle Innersoul, La Salle Dance Company-Contemporary, La Salle Dance Company-Street and LSGH Airforce. Proceeds of the show will be donated to the One La Salle Scholarship Fund.

Another fund-raiser is the DLSU original movie entitled Paglipad ng Anghel by DLSU university fellow and acclaimed writer/director Dr. Clodualdo "Doy" del Mundo.

As a tribute to the 17 La Salle Brothers who were massacred along with civilians in the DLSU chapel during World War II, a religious concert called Fire in the Soul (a Cantata) will be staged June 19 featuring La Salle alumnus Franco Laurel, the DLSU Harlequin Theater Guild. The concert is directed by La Salle alumnus Peque Gallaga and written by Palanca winner and DLSU faculty member Vince Groyon III.

A Lasallian gift to the people, the 15-story Henry Sy Sr. Hall, will house the Learning Commons, a central hub that will serve as intellectual crossroads.

Lasallian environmental initiatives were emphasized at the DLSU centennial opening celebration, with the culmination of the One Million Trees (OMT) Project, initiated by the 17-member De La Salle Philippines. The symbolic one millionth tree will be planted today beside the 100-year old bituin tree on the DLSU campus.
