Braving the blazing morning sun, Mary Grace Lordan, 21, was among thousands of job-seekers, who flocked to the Independence Day job fair organized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) at Rizal Park, Manila yesterday.

The computer science graduate from Binondo, who graduated last year, said she went to Rizal Park to apply for work at the job fair and not to join other government-organized festivities for the 113th Philippine Independence Day.

"I went here only for the job fair," she said.

Meanwhile, Ike Lozada, 44, who also joined the long queues at the job fair, said he went to Rizal Park to watch the parade, but then decided to try his luck seeking a job, having just ended his work in Saudi Arabia.

"I really want to attend the celebration. The job fair was only secondary since I have already applied to some agencies," Lozada said.

Labor Undersecretary Danilo Cruz said in an interview yesterday that he was not surprised by the large turnout of applicants in the Independence Day job fair due to the country's high number of unemployed workers with new graduates entering the workforce.

"Let us face the fact that there are still a lot of Filipinos, who are unemployed and a big percentage of this are our young workers and new graduates," he said

"From our data from our previous job fairs, it is usually the young people and the new graduates, who are among the persistent job seekers," he said.

As of 11 a.m. yesterday, DoLE National Capital Region Assistant Regional Director Benjo Benvidez, said at least 3,926 applicants had already registered at the whole-day job fair, while four were hired on the spot (HOTS) by some of the participating companies.

Benvidez said compared to the previous Independence Day job fair, more job-seekers registered this year for at least 20,000 positions from 126 participating companies.

"We expect a lower turnout will be hired since we have no pre-registration. Probably around 5 to 10 percent of the total registered applicants," he said.

Benvideze said the event serves as DoLE's contribution to activities for the 113th Philippine Independence Day.

"Many government agencies were involved with the celebration. But since the Department of Labor and Employment is known for conducting a job fair, we staged one today," he said.

"The event also aims to make the celebration more festive, but it is not the main consideration. We aim to free workers from poverty through job facilitation," he said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) also held a two-day trade fair at Rizal Park, which showcased the programs of at least 18 government agencies, and a "Diskuwento Caravan," where people could buy cheap basic commodities like rice, milk, and even school materials.
