MANILA, MAY 3, 2011 (STAR) By Aurea Calica - President Aquino is off to Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday to attend the 18th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders' Summit.
Aquino will be in Jakarta until May 9 and will be accompanied by Secretaries Albert del Rosario of foreign affairs, Cesar Purisima of finance, Gregory Domingo of trade and industry, Jose Rene Almendras of energy, Corazon Soliman of social welfare
and development and Ricky Carandang of the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office.
The leaders will be meeting amid high oil prices due to the political unrest in the Middle East and the death of Osama bin Laden, leader of the terrorist group al-Qaeda.
This year's summit will have as theme "Towards a Global Community of Nations" and Indonesia has set three priorities for ASEAN during its chairmanship, namely to achieve significant progress in the establishment of the ASEAN Community in 2015, to maintain peace and stability in the region to support the development programs, and to intensify ASEAN cooperation at the global level.
Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said the President had a briefing on his ASEAN trip yesterday morning but it had been agreed that the Department of Foreign Affairs would provide full details regarding the trip.
The President went to Indonesia and Singapore on state visits last February.
