U.S. MEMORIAL DAY COMMEMORATED IN THE PHL
MANILA, MAY 30, 2011 (PHILIPPINE DAILY NEWS ONLINE) – U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Harry K. Thomas, Jr. led a ceremony at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Fort Bonifacio in line with the commemoration of US Memorial Day.
The ceremony started at around 8:00 o'clock this morning, made to pay tribute to all soldiers who offered lives in the name of America.
Aside from Ambassador Thomas Jr., US Pacific Air Forces Commander General Gary L. North and Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff Gen. Eduardo Oban, Jr. also attended the ceremony.
Prior to this, the presence of government officials including diplomatic and consular corps, as well as the members of American and Filipino veterans' community are also expected in the memorial service.
Among the features of the above-mentioned program include the US Marines and AFP to offer flag honors during the commemoration.
More than 17,000 American military including 570 Filipinos who had served under the US Forces in Southwest Pacific were buried at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial.
The aforesaid cemetery has the highest number of soldiers died during World War II, wherein majority of them died during the war in New Guinea and in the Philippines.
