MANILA, MAY 28, 2011 (JOURNAL ONLINE) by : Alvin Murcia - THE Teachers Dignity Coalition yesterday slammed the Department of Education for not addressing the lack of classrooms, chairs, tables, toilets, books, computers and other school necessities with the June 6 class opening just around the corner.
Based on DepEd data, the classroom shortage totals 152,000 for this year and there is a need to recruit 100,000 teachers, problems which Education Secretary Armin Luistro admitted government is hard pressed to resolve.
According to Benjo Basas, national chairperson of TDC, if indeed Luistro is serious in addressing the twin problems, the DepEd should have alloted more funds to build classrooms and hire teachers.
The group said the DepEd led school cleanup program dubbed Brigada Eskwela is not the answer to the problems besetting the public school system.
He said every year, the number of school children increases and this means the DepEd should do something or the shortage of teachers will affect the quality of public education.
The group noted that they have no opposition to the so-called K+12 program of Luistro, but they are not convinced that it is the ultimate solution to the current public education problems.
Basas said the department should focus on the pressing needs of the public education system before embarking on an ambitious program like the 12-year basic education program.
