BASKETBALL GAME EMBARRASSMENT TO MILITARY / SAYAF MAN NABBED IN METRO

MANILA, MAY 9, 2011 (TIMES) Philippine soldiers were accused Saturday of playing basketball with suspects from the countrys worst political massacre, causing acute embarrassment to the military.

An inquiry is under way into allegations made by a relative of one of the 57 people murdered in the November 2009 attack, military spokesman Commodore Miguel Rodriguez said.

The instructions are, if these people are indeed suspects, we should arrest them, not play ball with them, Rodriguez told Agence France-Presse.

The chief of staff (armed forces chief General Eduardo Oban), was livid and ordered an investigation, Rodriguez added.

He said the governor of the southern province of Maguindanaowhose wife, sister, and several other relatives were among the massacre victims, had complained to the military over the alleged incident.

State prosecutors say the 2009 killings were an attempt by a rival clan to stop Esmael Mangudadatu from running for the provincial governorship. He won the electoral contest six months after the attack.

Six senior members of Maguindanaos rival Ampatuan clan, including the patriarch Andal Ampatuan Snr, are detained along with 73 other suspects.

But more than 100 others, including three other members of the Ampatuan clan who were supposedly seen by Mangudadatu followers playing basketball with soldiers in Maguindanao, are at large.

The Ampatuans had ruled Maguindanao province for a decade under the patronage of former president Gloria Arroyo, who rights monitors said allowed the clan to keep a large private army as a proxy force against Muslim rebels.

Rodriguez, the military spokesman, said taking part in sports activities was part of the Philippine militarys standard practice of winning the hearts and minds of communities amid a decades-old fight against various insurgencies.

He said it was plausible that the soldiers in question were unaware that they were playing basketball against people who are fugitives from justice.

If we play ball with them, we do not ask whether they are members of the Abu Sayyaf (a militant Islamist group blamed for the countrys worst terrorist attacks), or whether they are Ampatuans or Mangudadatus, Rodriguez said. AFP

Another Sayyaf man arrested in Metro By Non Alquitran and Cecille Suerte Felipe (The Philippine Star) Updated May 09, 2011 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Police arrested another suspected Abu Sayyaf terrorist while dating his girlfriend at Robinsons Place in Malate, Manila yesterday.

Asdatul Sahirun, who also goes by the aliases Abu Nawas and Kirih Hamid Sahiron, was arrested on the strength of a warrant issued by Judge Leo Jay Principe of Basilan Regional Trial Court Branch 1, according to Metro Manila police commander Chief Superintendent Alan Purisima.

He did not resist when shown the warrant of arrest, Purisima added.

Sahirun, who carries a P3.3-million bounty on his head, was wanted for nine counts of murder and four counts of frustrated murder.

Purisima said Sahirun was hiding in Metro Manila from troops hunting him down in Basilan after Principe issued the warrant for his arrest on July 26, 2007.

Intelligence director Chief Superintendent Manny Barcena said Sahiruns arrest was a product of several weeks of surveillance.

We have been working on his arrest for several weeks after we were tipped off by an informant of his presence in Metro Manila until we hit pay dirt, he said.

Sahirun is now undergoing tactical interrogation at the National Capital Region Police Office, Purisima said.

Sahirun was the second Abu Sayyaf suspect arrested in Metro Manila since US forces killed al-Qaeda chieftain Osama bin Laden in Pakistan last May 2.

Last Friday, police arrested suspected Abu Sayyaf terrorist Imam Arabani Jakiran while working as a security guard in Taguig.
