SUMMER IN THE PHILIPPINES STARTS THIS WEEK
MANILA, APRIL 10, 2011 (STAR) By Evelyn Macairan - The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration yesterday advised that by the middle of the week, the summer season would officially begin.
The weather bureau attributed the three-week delay of the dry season to the prevailing La Niña phenomenon.
One of the effects of La Niña is the formation of low-pressure areas that block the formation of high-pressure areas, which bring drier air and clearer skies.

Weather forecaster Jun Galang said the country would have a wet summer this year, with rainshowers and possibly the occurrence of a typhoon this month. Last week, tropical depression "Amang" entered the country.
In a year, an average of 21 typhoons enter the country.
Meanwhile, an intertropical convergence zone is affecting Southern Mindanao while moderate to strong northeasterly surface wind flow is prevailing over Luzon.
Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. The Visayas will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms, while Luzon will have mostly cloudy skies with light rainshowers.
Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon and Eastern Visayas and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds coming from the northeast will be light to moderate. Seas will be slight to moderate.
