CESAR RAMIREZ] President Aquino led the inauguration Friday of the P200-million worth engineered sanitary landfill facility.

"This means that while the city's garbage problem is being solved, extra revenue is also being generated by the landfill through its use by neighboring local government units (LGUs)," Aquino said.

He said this is good news to Urdanetans as it means there will be more jobs generated and their lives would be uplifted.

He lauded Mayor Amadeo "Bobom" Perez for installing the landfill as it does not only answer the garbage problem of the city but also of neighboring towns including Baguio City, Dagupan City, Mapandan, Sta. Barbara and Pozzorubio.

The facility is the first of its kind in the province and the second in the Ilocos region.

Situated in sitio Calegu, Barangay Catablan, the landfill covers a six-hectare area and is equipped with access roads including, wheel wash area, pumping station, leachate treatment pond, administrative building and other support structures.

The engineered landfill, completed through a P200-million loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines, can accommodate 20 tons of compacted solid waste from the city and another 20 tons from neighboring towns.

Gov. Amado Espino Jr. said it could be the only project of its kind in the province that had never met any opposition.

Perez said the landfill symbolizes the city's compliance with the provisions of the Solid Waste Management Act.

Former mayor and now Manila Economic and Cultural Office chair Amadeo Perez Jr., said the plan of installing a power plant, capable of creating two megawatts of power near the area to utilize the emission of methane from the landfill, is hailed by townfolk.
