BULLETIN EDITORIAL: DEADLY CONVEYANCES
MANILA, JANUARY 27, 2011 (BULLETIN) Medium Rare By JULLIE YAP DAZA – What is it about buses and the Aquino III presidency?
As a popular, affordable mode of public transportation, the passenger bus can no longer claim to give the public a comfortable ride, not after what happened last Tuesday afternoon on Edsa-Ayala. The explosion that killed four passengers does not bode well for the incoming Year of the Metal Rabbit (starting Feb. 3), which otherwise promises luck and profits for car makers and the transportation business. Good riddance, Metal Tiger!
The President had barely warmed his seat last year than a series of awful awful accidents befell buses and their paying passengers. Crashing, colliding, or rolling off the road, they conveyed too many innocent persons to their untimely deaths. The most memorable incident of all, because it happened at the Luneta and was covered live by radio and TV, was the taking of a tour bus of Hong Kong tourists held at gunpoint by a desperate ex-cop.
Five months later, newer and fresher images of the illfated Newman Goldliner bus on its last trip have found an unintended destination in the collective psyche: anxiety, apprehension, unease. Whether it was a terror attack or not as defined by police language, the people of Metro Manila don't feel safe. This time they won't be gawking at the bus and taking pictures with smiling cops in uniform.
